first, how long does a set of lifters usually last
in a 390 from 1970, the engine has 82 218 miles on it
the only thing ive had to do to it in the year ive had
it is tune it up now the lifters started tapping, just
a couple on the drivers side, what parts have to come
out to get to them, and can you just pop the lifters out
and stuff new ones in without special tools?
They should last a very long time, I'd check for proper oil pressure IF the sounds goes away with increase in oil pressure. Try a fresh oil change using say 20-50 oil and see if that helps keep them quite, then it might be an oil pressure problem.
I've heard that you can chang them with a grabbing tool, the type that have a magnet on one end, and pull them thru the intake opening, but I've never done it.
You might want to pull a few and see if they are worn, esp on the sides and lobe contact.
Lifter life varies greatly depending on the quality of the oil and oil filter used in the engine, the type of duty it sees, the environment it operates in, and the frequency of oil changes. I've seen lifters fail in as little as 40,000 miles (in an engine where the oil was never changed), and once had lifter failure in a SBC-equipped Olds Cutlass at 65,000.
One thing you can try is putting in a very high detergent oil. Sometimes it will succeed in cleaning out the tiny holes in the lifters that are clogging up and causing the tapping. Back in the 80s, we used to use Amoco 300 for this purpose. It is basically U.S. Army tank oil. The cans were marked "Warning. Only for use in diesel Equipment under extreme conditions." (or something like that). You could change out the standard 10W40 in a badly tapping engine with Amoco 300, run it for a week, and change back to 10W40, and the engine would sound like new -- no tapping at all. I don't know if it is still available, but you should be able to find some high detergent oil and give it a try.
