To get that flathead or early OHV pop on deceleration cut two small pieces of beer can, loosen your intake manifold and block the heat risers. Or just change your timing til it pops like you want. I was a master at the beer can trick 'cause I got to empty the beer can first!
Gusso, I was stationed at McClellan AFB in '55 and '56. I loved your hometown!

I think this is nonsense but when you're 16, it's gospel..

We used to run the car real hard on the freeway and then drive it to the house in "low" or in 2nd to keep the RPMs and heat in the Mufflers up.

Then we'd stick a water hose up the exhaust pipe and fill the Glass pack with cold water. The story was that the hot glass would go brittle when the cold water hit it and the packling would blow out.

Pretty stupid but I'm not alone. An awful lot of people did it.

If that is correct, then the new ones should sound just like any one of the hundreds of "glass packs" out there.

Personally, I hate all the noise they make. I have a hearing problem as it is without a vehicle making all that noise. I prefer to speak to people who are in the vehicle with me.

Yes...I owned an 88 F-150 (4X4) with glass packs. I hated it. Most people loved the sound, but not me.

So, blocking the heat riser makes that much of a difference in sound? Does it have any adverse effects on how the motor runs? Or does the motor just warm up slower?

Pretty much ... the difference being that Smithys are offered in longer lengths than the average cheapie glasspack, I would think.

Nice to see someone my age on this forum. If `36 is the year of your birth
we are the same age. Glad you liked it here. If ever out this way, pm me and
we will get together and continue with those beers for the exhaust manifolds.
Turned out to be quite a thread. lots of subjective opinions. Everyone
correct!

Everybody says that glass packs get louder because the fill eventually blows/burns out. The ones on my 55 Fairlane are about 16 years old and they don't seem too loud. They always had a low rumble from the 272. Maybe it depends on the performance and size of the motor? Gary, come on down to Vintage this Friday and I'll start it up for you. Jag

Gusso, you got it. I was born in Aug '36. My wife and I were in Dago a coupla years ago. Visited her brother and our sister in law, before her brother passed away. I'd love to drink a beer or 12 with you. And of course talk Fords and the good old days. I'm not joking, I really loved that town of yours. Best year I spent anywhere.

Kooper, it doesn't change the sound of the engine, but makes that beautiful- to some of us- popping noise when you let off the gas in gear. I knew 2 brothers who were experts at letting their flat head Ford back down just slightly in gear, then shift. Music to my ears, especially when done in between city buildings.

As far as the engine running different I don't remember that.

Gary, I just looked at your gallery. That is one nice ride you got. The striping on the B pillar reminds me of Tommy the Greek style. How many years have you owned your '56?

I'll add a gallery as soon as I figure out how. I'm beyond computer ignorant and into computer stupid!

Gary, I'll try to remember to wear my "JAG" hat. Of course it's red. If you are bringing your truck, you need to show up between 3:00 and 4:00. It's going to be packed this month because of the nice weather and the special raffle. If you're driving your grocery getter, then anytime is good because there is lots of parking outside of the Vintage lot. Jag

Hey Jag Red 54,

I just wanted to end this thread by saying I enjoyed meeting you Friday nite at Sac Vin Ford. Learned a lot from you and just want to say how much I like your Vicky.
You have done a fantastic job putting it in the shape its in. If I can help you in any way, by all means don`t hesitate to call. Hope you won the engine.

Thanks Gary, it's always good to know your neighbors. Now the next time somebody asks how to do a tilt front end, I know to send them to you. Unfortunately, I did not win the big raffle prizes. But I did win lots of cleaning supplies and a nice set of drill bits. Keep in touch, Jag

Blocking the risers doesn't affect the running of the engine at all, other than keeping the carb about 100 degrees cooler. I had some washers in mine to go "middle of the road" (some heat but not as much) and it did give it a little more "pop" on the slowdown, but nothing major.
