Straight pipes sound AWESOME. But the COPS don't like um. Or around here they don't anyway. I think the longer the smitty"s and the shorter the pipes the better and deeper the rumble.
If your going to keep your exhaust running out the back you can also go to a bigger exhaust tip. Believe it or not a bigger and longer exhaust tip will change the sound to. Dad put a set of flowmasters on his truck and he started it before they put the tips on it. it had 2" pipes out the back, and it sounded OK. The he had them put the 3" chrome tips and they are 2' or so long and it changed the whole sound of the truck. Made the sound 2 times a deep as it was. Just another thought for you.
i'm not worried to much about the law , but more about my neighbours . i'm probably gonna end up doing the straight pipes as it's the " childish inmature " thing to do ya know ! i had a set of royal scotties another ol' time glasspack of the 28 inch variety on the gmc i just got rid of with full pipes and to be honest they sounded like sh@# on it . had the same mufflers on my 83 f150 4x4 with a 302 , 4:11's 4speed all the way out the back and they sounded real sweet , real mellow deep tone . it's just amazing how each and every car , truck even if they are identical has it's own unique sound .
I put the cherry bombs on my '66 mustang with 200 CID I-6 Sprint engine with Clifford headers. Nice mellow sound with no crackle. Don't remember the lenght of them as they were installed at Midas. Not much exhaust pressure with that little 6 cyl. so may sound different on a Y-block.

what if your neighbors are the law?

I have a thrush muffler on my 300 6 bronco, sounds great, IMO. I had cherry bombs on my 351M in my '78 with a 45 degree bend before the rear tires with a 45 degree cut to make it flush on the body line. Sounded great, again IMO. The more bends, the more disruption the sound waves make.
two of my neighbours are city officers ! one has a 69 firebird with a butler 470 in it that would dain near drown out one of my race cars , he's running single chamber flowmasters of the 3 inch variety , the other had a studebaker golden hawk that he sold that had glasspacks and exhaust cut outs so they are just as guilty as me !!!!
Mine is basically a stock single exhaust on my Y-block. It is extremely quiet. I have to actually touch the truck to see if I left it running when I get out.
I`m thinking about putting on a couple Smittys but do not want
a loud cracking sound. I prefer a rumbling sound. Hard to remember
how sounds sounded that long ago but they sure sounded nice.
Never did like glass pacs as they never lasted very long .....
Smithys mufflers, back in the day, were steelpacks. As I understand it, the new Smithys look just like the old ones, but are made by a different company, and they're glasspacks now. Cherry Bombs, Red Hots, etc. are all glasspacks as well. Glass & steel have a very similar sound since they're both straight-through, but a steel-pack is supposed to last longer. Brockman Mello-Tones can be custom-made as a steel or glasspack (your choice). They also come in a variety of sizes. I believe the Smithys came in 22", 26", and 30". If you can see straight through them, then they are a glasspack or a steelpack. Cherry Bombs are glasspacks. Glass & steel both use a straight-through baffled core, and a packing to absorb some of the sound with minimum restriction.
What we used to do with either glass or steel was fill them up with deisel fuel and burn out the filler, it also tempered the metal to give them that Flatmotor Rumble when crusing but allow a good Bark when you nailed it.
and i thought i was the only one who knew that trick with the fuel !!!!!! geez better be quitei might realize i really am not 19 .......
I learned that trick from my Dad, Kinda. He would take a O/A torch and use it to get the muffler cherry red, pick it up with a pair of plyers and dunk it in the waste oil tank and hold it there till it stopped bubbling.
Kinda=Do you know how many degrees F there are between cherry red and the ignition point of a barrel of waste oil? Well neither did I, therefore, Dad show me the other way of burning out mufflers.
