Transmission Problems

Problem started about a week ago. Pulling out of driveway felt a jolt on the acceleration pedal (seemed to come from the transmission) like metal banging metal. Truck drove good but jolt/bang became more frequent especially taking off from a traffic light or slowing down to a stop.
This morning, put the stick in drive, took off, went through 2 gears then suddenly felt a down shift like changing a manual transmission from 5th gear to 2nd gear. The sudden downshift almost put my head through the windshield.
Took the truck out of drive and shifted the stick into 2 gear and truck runs fine as long as I keep the RPM's down. No check engine light on dash. Can't get anybody to diagnose till Monday. Any suggestions???

Truck has 118000 miles

sounds like maybe your planitary gear is broken. I recently had a transmission failure due to overheating problems and it sounds like you're discribing the symptoms I had. At first it was like a delayed engagement when taking off then got worse till from the drive (D) position it wouldn't even engage at all. I could put it in (2) and take off fine then manually put it in (D) and it would be fine. I won't tell you what repairs / replacement costs because I don't want to spoil your weekend. Have a few beers, put it out of your mind till Monday and enjoy the bliss of ignorance till then I hope I'm wrong; let us know.

Getting mixed reports on prices to repair transmission; anywhere from $2500-$3500. I'm really hoping it's not that bad. Don't want to dwell on it too much until I get a professional Diagnoses from a tranny shop. My friend put 2 rebuilt transmissions in his 2000 F-250 and he filled my head with all kinds of negative vibes. He eventuall switched vehicles to Chevy Silverado. Still hoping it's an easy fix!

I too have begun having problems with my transmission. When shifting into reverse the truck delays for about 15 seconds it it even engages. When the truck gets hot the O/D light flashes and will not shift out of second gear. Please help! 2003 F-250 4X4 7.3 6637 Straight pipe DP - 80 econo

The only way to know what's wrong is to have the codes read. Don't go cheap and ask Autozone to read them. They can't read Ford trans codes, but they will try. Then they will tell you there are no codes. There are. Trust me.

There's at least a 90% chance you're right. Unfortunately that will not be a cheap rebuild, a lot of hard parts have to change to replace the mechanical diode with a sprag one way clutch.

Pop was commenting on the OP problem - an '01 PSD. Wbeding's issue is different. The 03's didn't have the mechanical diode.
