Hi all,
I am installing the timing components on my FE and I have "Steve's" book for reference. The book says that after the chain and sprockets are on to install the oil slinger on the crank shaft. Well, .... I don't have one. When I tore the engine down there was not a slinger on the crank. I am positve of this. Not surprising as I did not have an oil baffle on one head or the valley pan either. Did all FE's have this? Must I have one? If so, where do I get one? Not sure I understand where it gets it's oil from to sling anyway. By the way, this was a 360 now a 390.
Thanks,
Lee
I would definitely recommend both. You can probably get the slinger from the parts store or ford. The valley pan will help keep hot oil off of the intake and down in the lifters and pan where it belongs. Just go to the junkyard for that. Every FE to my knowledge had one.
Hey,
That's my point. I drove this truck for 2 years before I tore it down for the rebuild, all this time unknowingly without the slinger. To be honest I cant figure out it's purpose. As far as I can tell the timing chain and gears are not oiled to begin with. So, where does the slinger get it's oil from to sling?
Confused,
Lee

I want everyone to think about this for a few seconds
The timing set gets its oil from the #1 main bearing...
and the #1 cam bearing...
Now that we have that out of the way, do you really
need a slinger?? I'm in the *NO* catagory, if the
front seal is going to leak, a slinger isn't going to
stop it. Oil inside an everyday engine is a fog, helped
by the fact that the crank whips into a fog because we
dont have crank scrapers, dry sump oil systems, or any
way to control the spray of oil out of the bearings.

That's a good point. Wasn't thinking about that. Still not sure I would leave the slinger out. It was there for a reason. Not sure what it was but there was a reason.
