272 problems

I've tried to stay away from posting, figuring that i can use the search and figure out this problem on my own but i finally gave in. I have a 56 f100 with a 272. my brother and I are trying our hand in getting this beauty back on the road. We have bought some new parts to breathe some life back into the engine but we have seemed to meet our match. The carb has been rebuilt, the distributor has new points, and rotor and plug wires. The car will turn over and had started once, but no more. The fuel tank is out and getting cleaned and we've been manually feeding gas to the carb and we know compression is being built but to no avail. What are we missing? We want to hear the engine run before we dump money into a new one yet that may be a better solution. I've tried to find complete pictures of the y blocks to make sure i have everything hooked up corectley but i haven't been able to locate one (even in our truck manual). I would love some help on things to check. I won't pretend and say i know everything, so it may be a simple/stupid solution so i'm open to any suggestions. Here is the truck, thanks in advance for any help!

ONce I was trying to fire a Ford I6 flathead by manually feeding gas through the carb. Had set the timing and adjusted points, spark was good. Only could get it to fire a couple times and figured the motor was just bad. Looking back, the motor may have run just fine if gas had been pushing through the carb the normal route and was vaporized properly.
All it takes is timing, compression, fuel, and spark.

Have you checked to make sure you have good grounds? There should be a beefy 2 gauge battery wire running from the negative post to the engine, a beefy braided strap running from the engine to the frame, and a smaller braided strap running from the engine to the firewall. Make sure the contacts are all clean.

BTW, in my truck, I have to turn on the key, then press the starter button to start the truck. Check for voltage at the coil with the key on. You might try running a wire from the battery to the + terminal on the coil while you're trying to start it.

Check the wiring circuit to the coil - especially the ignition resistor. My 56 Victoria uses a 6 volt coil and wiring from the solenoid allows 12 volts only when the ignition is in the start position. When ignition is in the run position, power to the coil is thru the resistor (to supply 6 volts). If the resistor is bad or wired incorrectly, engine can start but will die as soon as the ignition returns to run.

Thank you! I will check all of that to make sure it's getting power. I will hurry up on getting the gas tank back in working order so i can get everything hooked up properly. Is there a way to check the Fuel pump to make sure it's in working order?

To check the fuel pump get gas to the intake of the pump and pop the line off of the output side. While someone cranks the engine see if fuel comes out of the line from the fuel pump, while the line is higher then that gas tank. If it does then the pump is working if not your pump is probably shot or in need of rebuilding.

THANK you guys! there is a wire bad running from the battery to the coil, so i wasn't getting a spark, hooked up a temporary wire until i can get my new wiring harness installed, and the 272 started right up. Man these engines sound good. I hadn't heard one till tonight, i'm so pumped up. Thanks for all the advidce, i'm still not seeing gas get from the tank to the carb, so i'm still doing it manually, i'm thinking i have a bad pump. Anyways, thanks again!

Nice work getting it tracked down. Bad wires aren't easy to diagnose.

My 54 had both a gummed-up tank, and a gummed-up fuel line. I'd suggest running some acetone through the fuel line to start dissolving the varnish. Watch out for plastics when using acetone. Acetone will soften plastic.
