Routing Heater Hoses

1987 F-150 4.9L.

Took off both heater hoses at the same time. Can someone look & tell me where the hose coming out of the water pump hooks up to. Is it the side closest to the fender or furtherest from the fender.

Does it really make a difference?

Thanks, James

But actually, does it matter which one goes where?

I don't think it does. I've hooked them up either way and they worked. It just flows through with no check valves.

I think coolant should flow in at the bottom and leave at the top to keep it purged of air pockets.

the ford service manual says to do it this way.

others who had air in the core or low heat output switched the hoses and it helped.

10-4, I agree with in at the bottom and out at the top. With the hose connections side by side, I just did not think about the internal routing of the piping. In at the bottom and out at the top it should be!!!

Both of the tubes attach at the top in the exact same way as each other, so it really should not matter which hose goes where. If for some reason it doesn't work, swap the hoses and see what happens, but from a physical standpoint, there is no difference in the two tubes on the heater core.

that is untrue.

one is an inlet and one is an outlet.

And they are both the same, so there's no way to tell by looking at the heater core, which is which.

believe whatever you want then.

ford service manual says one in inlet and one is outlet and that is good enough for me.

I'd hook them up like Ford says, but I'm just saying that it probably won't cause any ill-effects if it was hooked up backwards.

If you use Ford's factory formed hoses and plumb it up you have an inlet and an outlet and it's self explanatory which is which but if you replumb it you can hook it up any way you want and it would make no difference. Think of the heater core as a continuation of the heater hose with some fins on it.
