I have a 1997 F-350 PSD with 78,000 miles. The other day I hear a sort of winding sound that I have never heard before.
The truck is still driving fine but the sound is driving me crazy because it has never made this sound before. It's after the truck warms up and it has to be moving.??
I know that it could be any number of things I'm sure, but does anyone have some ideas that i could start looking at ? Thanks for the Help in advance..
Welcome to the forum dcgarda. Are you new to diesels? If so, maybe it's just the turbo whine you are hearing. We kinda need a little more to help you out.
Does the noise happen when:
You are on the throttle.
Off the throttle.
Certain speed.
along with vibration.
performance loss.
etc. etc. We'll help you figure it out no problem with a little imput.
I'm sorry to sound so vauge about the noise. I have owned the truck for over a year now. It only makes the noise when I'm on the throttle. There is no vibration. It's like the truck is laboring if you can understand that even though I still have the power.
No vibration.
Let me put it like this, I love my wife but she knows NOTHING about cars and when she was in the truck the other day she asked where the noise was coming from..
There are two things that come to mind with your description. Either the cooling fan is locked up and that is what your hearing or the exhuast back pressure valve (EBPV) is closing. The EBPV is a butterfly valve that is locating in the exhaust outlet of the turbo. Its used for faster cold weather warm ups but it doesn't work very well. To check that open the hood with a cold engine. right on the turbo under the intake tubing there will be a two wire connector that is bolted to the turbo. unplug the one side and just leave it dangle there (it won't hurt anything) then drive it for a few days. if the problem is gone then just leave it as it is. The valve is worthless IMO and the connector can just stay where it is.
if that doesn't fix it post back and we will go from there.
As always Tim, spot on. My vote is fan....... Loud wuuuuuuuuuur sound. Fan clutch is not disengaging. Let me ask you this dc, has it been hot where you are lately. Running the ac more etc. If not, look at this....... open the hood and look at the fan clutch. The big grey thing in the middle of the fan. Is there oil all over it? If there is, most likely your fan clutch went away.
While you are under the hood ,try wiggleing the fan & look at the water pump while doing it, also you may want to remove the belt & look at all the pully's & bearing's on the front of the motor...You can also run & drive it with the belt off & see if the noise is still there....
if the fan clutch is stuck engaged then you can try to turn it (engine off of course) it will be almost impossible to turn without spinning the motor over. if functioning properly then it will trun with light resistance.
if you are running ac on then it will be engaged due to the extra heat from the ac condensor, this is normal, let her wind up, floor that sucker, if the fan is on you will definatly know the sound of the fan when the r's get up, if she has no power and wont rev for ya then i'd be going with the ebp valve. the ebp when engaged also has a distinct sound coming from the exhaust pipe, sounds like air rushing through a tunnel
I just wanted to pop back in and say THANKS for all the replys I got. I found the problem. I had two pully's that had gone bad I changed them out and now it sounds and runs GREAT...
