I took some advice from John W. and bought a donor truck to swap in power goodies and a C6 into my 68 F100. I bought a 73 F100 beater with everything I needed. My question is that the 73 has a later FE block 360, backwards 105. I've already stripped the "352" to take to the machinist. Figuring the blocks are in similiar shape for rebuilding, which should I use? I thought the 73 105 is beefier? Correct? Also, I have D2TE-AA heads on the 73 and C8AE-H heads on the 68. Pretty much the same right? Is there a preference here?
You have a good thing going! First off your 105 block is for all intensive purposes an FE made from an FT block. It has already been converted. Your D2TE-AA heads are great for porting but I think the C8 heads flow a little better in stock form. I would use the 105 block for the bottom end and put a 390 crank, rods and pistons in it. Exceptions to this would be if the 105 block is already .030 over and the 352 block is std. You won't be blowing the bottom end out of either unless you are going to go crazy with power adders and such so the reinforced main webs are just a cool thing to have on a mild engine and really serve no dramatic purpose. I would then judge the heads by their condition. Most likely they will need excessive valve guide work but I would probably go with the C8 heads if they were in the same condition or better. Someone correct me if I am wrong about the C8 heads flowing better.
TYpically the reverse 105 is the better of the 2 blocks. But I have found that some 105 mirror blocks were used as original FE motors. List the actual block code and i will try to help more. That will tell if it is a true FT or just another FE block. Hope I helped.
