Question heads and blocks

Where do you find the numbers that tells what block and heads on a 1969
F100 no vin on the door.
Numbers on the heads are C8AE-H DIF FoMoCo 8H17 W25 Right head
C8AE-H DIF FoMoCo 8H22 W26 Left Head
Intake Is C8TE 9425-A 8F24 is it a 360 or 390

These numbers only are probably not enough info, I think you are going to have to actually check out the engine. (The heads could have been changed, so even if they were on a particular engine from the factory, this is 38 years later.)

All you need to do is remove all 8 spark plugs to make it easy to turn the engine over by hand. Then use a small (1/4" stick - 8"+ long) to feel the piston position. Put the engine on TDC by the timing mark. Put your stick in the spark plug hole perpindicular to the top of the piston and make a reference mark flush with the spark plug hole. (Remove the stick.) Then turn the crank 180 degrees - you can make a chalk mark directly opposite the timing notch on the harmonic balancer. The repeat placing the stick through the spark plug hole and make a second mark. The distance between the marks is the stroke. 3.5" stroke is a 360; 3.78" (or approx. 3-3/4") is a 390.

The heads are 1968 models (C8) Automotive heads ( AE). Right head cast on August 17, 1968 (8H17) and left head on August 22, 1968 (8H17). The intake is as 1968 (C8) truck mainfold (TE) cast on August 24, 1968 (8H24) anf since the 360 and the 390 use identical heads and intakes tells you the engine is probably the original motor. Block numbers will not thel as the 360 and 390 blocks are identical also. Use acheda's stick method or pull the pan and get the crank numbers. Oh yeah, VIN number should be at the base of the windshield, driver's side at the rear of the dash. You read it from outside.

Now I didn't think the put the 390 in F100's, did they? So if it's stock, 360 then, right?

On a 38-year old truck I would not bet on it being the original engine, unless I bought it off the original owner who had told me that the engine was original.

I'm guessing that pulling 8 plugs is easier than pulling the pan . . .

How precise are your measurements? IMHO, time to get out the digital caliper...

With a margin of error by .280" with a 4.00" plus bore (?), would that be 4.050", 4.060", 4.070" or 4.080" overbore?

I carry in the truck at all times 3 pieces of 3/32" Tig rod, one at 4.045", 4.125", 4.225" (dreamer size) plus a length of 1/8" brazing rod at 3.78".
With these any quick check of a motor can be performed including oversize bored blocks. Just as fast and safe vs getting a caliber ripped off or lost if in the truck all the time. Replacing a Helios isn't cheap.
