Just took a flashlight and looked at my up pipe on the drivers side and found soot on the top flange and bottom flange where pipe would connect to the manifold. this being a truck, makes it hard to fix. I looked at a few other posts on exhaust leaks. what is the normal procedure for fixing this? Its going to be a pain to get off. Do I need a new pipe? Any help on how to change this would be apreciated.
if the pipes are good you just need to go to a dealer or IH and get the donuts and new bolts...it is a pita to do..i have a link here some wheres..ill keep looking and post it for ya..
Get the bellowed pipes!!!
I fixed my donut style pipes six months ago and they are leaking again a little bit.
And I was very careful to make sure they were sealed up good.
It worked great and then I made it about 3000 miles and the upper flanges started turning black again.
Here is where to get them. http://www.shop.blackwidowdiesel.com...&productId=304
I just completed the up-pipe gasket replacement this week. About a six hour job. Basic hand tools. Parts can be purchased from IH. I also replaced the turbo and pedastal "O" rings. What a difference in the engine, boost is back and exhaust smell gone.
I could not afford the bellow pipes at this time.

Look in post #3 of this thread, the link is there.
Everything you need is included in the set.
The only difference is whether you want to pay extra for the ceramic coating or not.
I'll add a healthy seconding to the bellows. The kit comes with everything needed to do the job- Bolts, bipes, steel gaskets, new collector. If you can't afford the bellows just yet, then wait until you can. Far cheaper to do it right once, then wrong a few times.
I'd like to but not sure if I have the $$ for the bellows. The leaks are bad enough to hear inside the cab so this might be a next weekend project. Can this pipe be taken off from underneath without pulling the turbo?
problem is, it is not just as simple as replacing the donuts. The pipes themselves become wore and indented where the donut rests. So replacing the OEM donut gasket may not do anything at all. When I did mine the first time, I wound up breaking the collector due to a seized bolt, and had to replace the collector, both pipes and the seals. That actually cost as much as the whole bellows kit from international. Again, I fully understand being on a budget, but just remember, by replacing only the gaskets, you may be a lot of time and effort into it, but still no better off. However, if you must, go to Napa and find a donut gasket that is wider than the OEM one. I did that and found a perfect gasket, unfortunately I did not write down the part #.
well now i'm worried that it'l leak if i use the replacment donuts. I don't mean to sound cheap but arn't there any bellows less expensive than the ones on that link? I can picture myself taking all weekend to put in the donut gaskets and they leak in the end.
