Can you guys toss out some names and/or internet retailers for upgrade heads comparable to the Edelbrocks. I'm thinking I could get some upgraded iron with comparable flow and maybe avoid the Heli-Coil hassle again. I really don't think my 69 F250 will notice the weight loss of the Eds either. I keep threatening to buy the Eds, but the last experince was not a good one. I realize many of you would tune up the old heads. But, I don't have any idea how or desire to do that and I don't know of a decent shop in central Texas. Most of the locals usually respond with something like "An F what engine?".
Gtex, Dennis Carrico a DSC Motorsports offers ported heads with the 2.09/1.65 valves installed and has some very good flow numbers. I will look about and see if I can find his internet address. DF
http://www.dscmotorsport.com is the address Dennis is a great guy to deal with. He has many FE parts and will aqquire just about anything for you. He deals with dove parts a little too.
Thanks guys, looks like a good source. I'll keep you updated if I do anything. Do you think these are overkill for my setup?
Name: DSC Powerflo 428 Cobra Jet Heads
Description: These are highly modified 428 CJ castings designed to keep you ahead of your competition. I start with C8OE castings, have them cooked and wheel-a-brated, magged and pressure checked and hot tanked and cleaned. I then Install a new set of Stainless Steel 2.09"x 1.73" valves. Unshrouding of the Exhaust valve is followed by "pocket porting" to increase low and mid lift flow. The Exhaust port is completely ported to the end and the Intake is cleaned up to straighten and maximize flow. Exhaust hard seats are installed and guides are replaced or renewed as necessary. Teflon seals are installed, and combustion chambers are polished to eliminate the possibility of hot spots developing. A 3 angle valve job is done and the heads are surfaced on the deck and exhaust face. Finally, Springs, retainers and keepers good for .600" lift are installed. The heads are then sprayed with graphite and bagged, ready to bolt on and run hard.
Gtex, those would be wonderful heads but they won't work on a 390. To run the really big 1.73 exhaust you need a 4.160 bore or bigger. On your 4.050 bore 390, the valve will hit the cylinder wall. The exhaust hit the cylinder at about .350 lift when I put the 1.73 valve in a 4.080 bore, just to see if it would fit. It is possible to make room by moving the valve guide, but I think Dennis would have mentioned it if he had done that ( it is alot of work!). Stick to a head with the 1.65 exhaust valves, the 2.09 intakes are fine though.....DF
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-02 AT 08:34 AM (EST)]Gtex, if it helps any,
Desert High Performance out of Arizona can rework you some 390 heads with the bigger valves and porting. I picked up a set for my 390, after shipping they were right about $990. Haven't had a chance to really test them out yet, we're still fixing the block up. They certainly looked nice though. I know they replace the seats, do the 3 angle valve job, replace the guides and springs (can handle .575" lift), and you can get the heads ported or not (think it's like 3-400 less if you get it with just the valve job).
I can't tell you what kinda flow you get. But I do know they're the small chamber heads (mine are 69cc).
They have a website at www.desertperformance.com. They don't have any good info on the heads there though, would be best to give 'em a call.
