Well, I was on my way to Race City in calgary to watch go to the drag strip(to watch), on the way down the highway, it started to vibrate violenty and not 20 seconds later my transfer case literally blew up, into several pieces, with the front driveshaft bouncing down the highway.
I got it off the highway, looked underneath and saw my chain from the case hanging and knew immediately what happened. The tow truck driver was extremely helpful on what to do next and where to get parts. Anyways, the money shots. Any donations are welcomed.
The left front was still engaged, which caused it to go. I guess the vacuum system on the hubs is an issue. Oh well, time to upgrade, warn hubs all the way.
Wow that looks horrible. Its amazing what little harmonic vibrations can do. Lucky the front went and the rear stayed on, thats an expensive driveshaft. The part number for the Warn hubs is 38826, and it's about $180.
I had vibrations from vandalised bolts for the rear driveline (they loosened them) and it broke the back case on the transmission, right in front of the t-case. 230 bucks for new parts and I was back on my way. Minus my own labor.
I still don't quite understand what you think happened? I don't believe that can happen just because one of the hubs were locked. When was the last time you changed the fluid in the t-case?
Actually my dad(licensed mechanic) is around and took a look at it, figured it was either too much slack in the transfer case chain causing it to bounce over the sprocket, or the front driveshaft cv joint was fubar'ed causing it to be out of alignment with everything else.
And does anyone know if a 1996 f250(standard) transfer case will match up to a 2000 f250(auto)? I don't need 4x4, just something to get me moving again.
wow..A long time ago the chain broke in my dads jeep but it never blew out the case. i'm going to change out my transfer case fluid now. It will make me feel a little better 2 weeks from now when i hook to the sled. How much does the case hold?
