Everytime I start my truck on cold start either in the morning or at night it has a bad rapping noise. I was told it might be the oil pump and by the sounds of it it already did its damage. I hooked it up to a computer and pulled 3 codes the only on ei remember is misfire on cylinder 1. but i know thats the coil pack for the rough idle. here is a video of the sound it makes. but the noise you are about to hear is minor to what it has done 2 days ago and this morning. http://s178.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=000_1105.flv
i forgot a few things in it. the truck also misses really bad. shakes bad. and someone else thought the lifters were making the noise. I changed the oil today and put dino oil in it 10w-30 for engines with 70,000 miles. First itwas the four wheel drive whats next anything else instore i should know lol.
Each of my trucks make a noise at start up like that every now and then, but not every time. Except for the 2001 SD but that is a whole different story, it has 220,000 miles and has been used very hard with a few engines mods added, it is about to blow up and is not holding oil pressuer at idle and sounds like a PSD.
Don't over react yet! Get the codes fiqured out and that may tell you something. A bad COP will make it do funny things. It does stop making noise when the oil pressure gets up. Add a real oil pressure guage to get some real numbers instead of the factory dail. You can drop the oil pan and check to see if the oil pickup spout is getting clogged. But don't ignore it now, if it is haviing a oiling problem and you find it now it may save you a motor later.
I am going to try my best to finish my 5.4 off at the next Mud Bog on the 15th. It deserves to go out in a blaze of glory, not lock up going down the interstate!
Well your using the wrong weight oil ! 10w-30 is not recomended.5w20 or 5w30
Hopefully you haven't been using that weight oil all along.
What brand filter are you using some aftermarket filters have been known to have bad drain back valves.
Yes you may have a bad oil pump, chk the psi with a mechanical guage and see what it is at idle cold an hot

I have 10w-30 in one of my 5.4L for 220,000 miles and it is just now complaining. But my answer to that is I don't think the oil finally hurt the engine, I think removing the rev limiter and using it for mud bogs did the trick. 10w-30 is not going to hurt 5.4L.
Now the brand of oil used may make a difference in the amount of slug, etc. I would get a mechanical oil pressure gauge added and see what it tells you. May need to clean your pickup screen. I will never use pennzioil again because of the slug buildup I have seen it do in engines.
