Last year for straight axle Sport-Trac?

Hey All,

I understand that the late model Sport Tracs now have independent rear suspension. What was the last year for the straight axle?

What are y'alls experiences when comparing the straight axle version to the independent rear end regarding payload capacity, durablity, etc?

Thanks for any input.

2006 was the last year for the solid rear axle as mine is a 2007 and it has independent rear suspension. There is a big difference! My 04 F150 with conventional rear axle used to bounce all over the road when on gravel roads with washboard. The 07 ST is stable as can be just like being on pavement. I also pull a 17' travel trailer with mine and its has no issues at all. I don't even use a load leveling hitch, but I have the electric brakes hooked up.

I hear a lot of talk in the Ranger forum that the independent suspension is "not a truck suspension" and is stated as being weak.

?

i have a 2002, not sport, and it is independant rear. works great as DB said. drives very smooth, not like my F150. ------85,000 miles, no problems.

Another question: I understand the current 4.6 is a 3-valve head design. What year did the 4.6 go to the 3-valve from the 2?

Thanks,

Maybe it isnt "truck suspension" but I can tell you it beats bouncing all over the place and clenching your teeth for every pothole. For the weight they are rated to carry, IRS is fine. Its hard to overstate how much improved the Ex's ride now compared to the old days.

I think 2007 is also the first year for the 4.6 3V engine but my '04 F150 had a 5.4 3V engine that was also first year. I hope Ford has all the computer bugs worked out, which seems to be as this truck is great so far.

For Heavy off roading or carring heavy loads, you would probably want a solid axle. But as for what most people will be doing in a Sport-trac IFS is a step in the right direction.
