HI, I have a 2001 xlt 4dr. with towing package and it really rides stiff,my question is can I get a little softer ride if I change the shocks to a softer shock, what shocks to change to?,any help? I bought it used and it has 140,000 on it and I have no idea when and if the shocks have been changed they don't have a name on them they are just black. THANKS for any help. RAY
Sounds like you may still have the stockers on there. I recently replaced mine with a set of Rancho RS-5000's and get a great ride. I highly recommend them.
I have heard several of the Monroe's are also a good choice. Maybe someone will chime in on what other other options offer a good ride quality.
normally the springs set the stiffness and the shock sets the amount of bounce or dampening. did you notice a difference in stiffness with the new Monroes, or are you talking about "better ride" due to no bouncing.
I drove it to the store (24 miles round trip ) and it seems to have less bounce and a smoother ride all around. IT has the towing package so I know it isn't going to ride like my car,but I think the new shocks will help a lot. THE only bad part was the changing it took me about 4 hours to do,I found that I didn't have the right tools and had to make do with what I had,not a good idea, but for a 70 year old I think I did pretty good. THANKS RAY
HI, CAN someone tell me if the monroe reflex shocks have to be driven for awhile to brake them in before they start working the way I thought they would or should they work right out of the box. I find that my old motorcraft shocks that had 140,000 on them worked better in curves and also when I stopped, it seems to me they even worked better on the stright drives than these new monroes do. THE curves I go around on my way to town never were a problem with my old shocks but now my explorer seems like it leans way to much and feels loose. ANY help???? THANKS RAY
sorry Ray, shocks dont break in. I dont know the Monroe specifically. they are not adjustable with a screw or **** of any sort i assume? what your describing now does sound like shocks. "lean, loose, wiggle" are shock words. "stiff, rigid, or give" are spring or suspension type words.
I had a 1999 XLT 4x4 w/tow package. This Explorer rode very firm, to firm for my liking. I changed the tires to Michlen LTX and new Monroe Reflex Shocks. Guess what. No Change at all. This Exployer only had about 15K on it at the time. It must be the springs are just rated for towing a heavy load all the time. This Explorer was a very good vehicle otherwise and still rode a little stiff when I traded it off with 52K. Oh, guess what, I recently traded for a 2007 Explorer EB without the tow package, rides great.
HI,EVERYTHING under the explorer looks good,it has always been on pavement and is very clean under it. I guess I will email MONROE'S tech dept. and see what they have to say about it. THE shocks have a 90 day exchange and a lifetime warranty on them and they say if I don't like them within the 90 day's I can take them off and put something else on and they will pay $50 per axle labor,so I guess we will see. THANKS to everyone for your reply's,I will keep it posted as I find out. RAY
the mid to late 90s trucks have a TRUCK axle and setup. they normally are on the "stiff side" i have a 96 EXP and it is rougher than my F150 4 x 4. I also have a 2002 EXP with independant rear suspension. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. THis thing rides better than most cars i have been in. Its all in the spring and axle setup - design.
HI, TO update,, GOT a hold of monroe finally and they are going to refund my money and have ups pick up the shocks. I am putting my old motorcraft shocks back on for now I know they work on the curves. THANKS to all for the help. RAY
I have put Bilsteins on my first two Explorers and I like them very much. Much less side to side sway than the originals whick I'm sure were quite worn out by the time I replaced them. Bilsteins aren't the cheapest (about $50 a shock) but like most things you get what you pay for.
