Hello, 2003 Explorer XLT Sport 4X4, 63 K. I have read the posts and have tried the recomendations. I have sprayed WD-40 on all latched openings twice with 2 1/2 cans used. I have gone inside the driver's door and flushed/cleaned the electrical connections.
Nothing has changed and I hope someone can recommend the next step.
-Left mirror puddle lamp does not come on, right one does.
-doors will not lock or unlock from driver's side controls. However, I noticed from setting in the front passenger seat with the engine running; the doors will lock and unlock from the front passenger control. When the "unlock" is activated; after a moment, the driver's door will lock itself.
-Interior lights stay on until battery saver shuts them off.
-Interior lights stay on when driving for about 200 yards or so and then turn off.
-Also when driving , The door locks activate after driving several miles.
I would appreciate any discussion. Thank You.
I have the same similar problem with my 2003 Ford Explorer. If I turn the dome light on through the switch I get the door ajar notice on the dash and my power locks will not work.
To get rid of the "door ajar notice" I have to turn the dome light completely off and it goes away and my door locks will work again. My left puddle light will not go on when I use the remote door opener,Right one does. There is power to the left puddle light but it is just over 10 amps and the bulb is good.
You guys both really need to get your trucks scanned for trouble codes by someone with a scanner capable of reading Ford codes. I'd recommend going to a Ford dealer for this one. It sounds like might be trouble with the module communication systems. If so, it's probably the security module but might (and/or) be the instrument cluster. Please post back what you find out.
I have the same "door ajar" problem with my 2003 Explorer, but it seldomly happens. Regarding the indoor light that goes off after awhile, I used to just leave it and let the auto switch-off do the job. But after having this car for about 2 months, I discovered that all indoor lights can be switched off manually using the dimmer switch located beside the headlight switch.
Thank you for the lead and I will try turning out the dome lights with the dash switch until I get this thing scanned for trouble codes. I appreciate the discussion
I also thank you for the tips and discussion. Just did the wd-40 thing I have been reading about, Lubed all the locks. No Luck!
I bought this thing from a good dealer in Listowel Ontario a few months ago. I am going to contact them to see if they have a device to read Ford codes and will report back with what I find. Thanks again
Hello, I have had no luck so far. I had the explorer scanned for trouble codes yesterday. No trouble codes !
Well you don't say whether or not you took it to a dealer to get scanned. Not all scanners can read Ford codes, especially those not set by the PCM. Here's another thing that could be wrong (unlikely): check the ground points behind the front passenger kick panel. I think there are two ground points behind that panel, so put a wrench on them both and make sure they're tight. Good luck, keep us posted.
Hello rrgone, I took my explorer to our maintenance garage. I did not get the scanner name brand but the mechanic that used it, was hired from a ford dealership. A pretty sharp kid. We have explorers, expeditions and crown vics that he keeps running. I assumed this one reads ford trouble codes. This mechanic was the one who told me to flush the opening latches and shut/open them several times. This I also read on this forum so I beleived he knew what to do. Anyway, I appreciate your advice and hope we get this fixed.

Last time I was at that dealer was in 1978, they had trouble keeping our "Black/Whites" running. Enjoyed my posting there, slept for 5yrs in Fordwich.
No luck at resolving this yet. I have run across some information that I am couriouse about. I ran across a list of TSB's, but there was no link for further information
1.TSB # 17280 Oct. 2003 Reagarding the Generator causing a whistle or "Hoot" during cold weather. I have this problem.
2. TSB # 05136 Jan 2005.
Any help would be appreciated
Hi,
I have tried numberous times to get my door ajar fixed. on my 99 ford exp xlt.
The read passenger door.
I took off the panel 5 different times , used 2 dcans wd-40. NO LUCK.
I have decided to live with it.
so this am, I give it one last try. shhhhhh... not to loud, it may hear me.
I is working now. well at least so far today.
Just passing it on.
Now on to the PO171 and PO174 lean issues. Vacumm leak? i think so.
I have to figure out houw to do that now.
WD40 is not really a lubricant, it was designed to be a moisture dispersant with some lubricating properties.
Find a good rust penatrant with good lubricant properties and it will do a lasting job.
Use a propane torch on low flow and aim it at all gasket joints, the RPM's will spike when you hit the leak, no smoking while you are doing this, use in well ventilated area.
