Everyone on here will tell you the same, Motorcraft or Beru only. And they are right.

+1

There may be some dual coil glow plugs that are in theory safer even than Beru, but so far I can't find any of them localy, so I can't vouch for them.

Beru, acceptable

Bosch, sort of OK

Autolite, very bad

Wellman, very bad

Champion, also very bad

There are two major differences that make the beru plug better.

1) it heats up slower

2) if it does burn up, it will not swell up like the others and become impossible to remove or worse yet, burn the glow plug tip off completely.

This is an example of the best case scenario when a glow plug tip gets passed out the exhaust (my engine):

Others were not so lucky.

Its also recommended to test the glow plugs before installing them by heating them up for 10 seconds.

We installed a set of AC Delco slow-glow plugs (12V units for a 5.7 Olds diesel) in my buddy's '86 F250, they don't seem to work good as they take forever to heat up and even then truck still has hard time firing up. He just purchased 5 Motorcraft/Beru ZD1s, once we got the remaining 3 to complete the set the Delcos are coming right out.

We have the OEM AC delcos in my dad's GMC and they seemt to be holding up well over the years. Its a 1993 6.5 turbo.

Glow time seems to be higher in cold weather. Up to 12 seconds, my truck will never glow for longer than 10.

I tried Autolite, before i joined this forum.
I was lucky, 2 of them stopped working within 2 months, was able to get them out without leaving the tips down there.
I replaced them with BERU plugs 3-4 years ago, and they are still working good....

i was looking at the heads off a 6.9 i was going to rebuild. It has beru glow plugs.
has any one come up with a way or adapter to use the spade glow plugs in a later model 7.3l with bullet tip connectors? i want to use them as my budget is tight but i dont want to cut the wires to make them work

Last time I checked both ZD 1A (spade) and ZD 9 (bullet) were both the same price.

I will say, I have Autolites in my truck, had them in for over a year with no problems , now I have a stuck injector and am pulling the heads...so maybe I will go find me some ZD 9 plugs.....just to be on the safe side
