I saw an ad in the latest Diesel Power Mag for a Dur-a-turd downpipe that had the fiberglass heat wrap on it. I just ordered my MBRP 4" exhaust with 4" downpipe. I was wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to the wrap, and should I put it on my new downpipe? I haven't recieved it yet, thats why I am asking. Is there a drop in EGT's? Has anyone else done this and noticed anything? Thanks.
From what I've heard, it is a very tight fit to get a new downpipe in without anything else around the outside of it. So I would think you may have problems trying to get a wrapped downpipe back on there with the added diameter of the wrap. Even if you get it on, the rubbing and vibration against the firewall would probably damage the wrap.
If anything, I would suspect that your EGTs will go up, as you are keeping more of the heat in the pipe. The trade-off is in keeping additional heat out of the engine compartment.
My mbrp offroad turbo back is 4" but came with a 3.5" downpipe. No fitment problems with the downpipe and I don't think wrapping it would cause clearance issues, but then again I've heard of people with clearance problems without wrap.
i am going to wrap my up-pipes and manifolds, but i dont think i will be wrapping the downpipe. i was considering that "foil" type material to wrap the turbine side with.
i am also going to wrapping my charge pipes from the I/C to the intake elbow with header wrap also to keep engine heat from soaking in
