I installed an EGT Gage and I installed the probe on the passenger side exhaust manifold.
My truck is stock 2006 F-350 PSD 4X4 DRW I recently went on a trip to Montana on pulling one of the big hills to Yellowstone the truck slowed down to 35 and stayed there no big deal I’m pulling 16,000 pounds but when I looked at my exhaust temp it was at 1,450 degrees. As soon as I saw it I let off the throttle and it immediately cooled off.
My question is since the truck is all stock should I worry about this and keep it under 1,350 or could I have continued on?
I wouldn't keep it there for long for sure. 1350 is one thing, 1450 is starting to stretch. Pulling that much I'd try to keep it under 1300. I'd pull at that all day.
Since I'm here and reading your signature I want to take this time to salute you and thank you for your service to our country.
USMC DIESEL,
Be thankful you had a EGT gauge installed. Most folks without one would be oblivious to this. Yes, you are an exceptional canidate for a larger exhaust due to the OEM downpipe only being a meager 3". When you go with a 4" downpipe your EGT's will be up to 200 degrees cooler under the same circumstances.
BTW, Praise The Lord you (and others) are home safe from our "Peak Oil" war.
As the terrorist are currently at 1600 Pensylvania Ave.
As far as choices go on exhaust, Personally I went with Magnaflow. I found the sound to be more mellow than MBRP. After straight pipes, mellow was good.
you were wise to get out of it. short bursts at 1450 are no danger, but i wouldn't hold them there for long. 1250-1300 all day you should be cool, but it's a good idea to give the old girl a break anyway and not push it.. that's a lot of heat.
