What makes deeper exhaust sound?

I am trying to deepen the sound of my exhaust (truck in signature). RIght now I can hear it above the radio at moderately loud levels (not ear splitting).

What kind of mods make deeper exhaust sound?

Larger tailpipe or exhaust tip?

Glass pack muffler vs chambered muffler?

Other things?

If I remove the muffler and just run a straight pipe in it's place so I have cat, resonator and long, long pipe to rear, will it sound good?

What if I remove the muffler and install two glass packs in a row? Would that make deeper sound and not too loud? Don't want any louder, at least not in neighborhood. On freeway I don't mind if louder.

i cut my exaust at the 2nd cat, and LOVE the tone i get.

i can creep around cops when need be, by being easy on the skinny pedal, or lay down on it and turn heads from 150 yards away with wikid tone.

if you want deep tone, lose the muffler.

the more chambers, the deeper the tone, but the quiter the sound, if you wanted to keep a muffler. (the safe way)

best you will get with a muffler is prolly the 2 chamber original 40 series w/ tip.

ps. dont do glasspak.

Thanks Stumpbuster. I think the straight pipe in place of the muffler is easiest. If I go chambers I would want a 3 chamber like the Delta 50 Flowmaster, but I hear FM is too tinny sounding. I don't want too loud but would be nice to have really wicked sound when floored. I think I will inspect today. I have hole in back plate of muffler in line with tube from input pipe. But I think muffler still quiets b c of the perforated tube. If I loose the muffler and tie in to full tailpipe, should be good. I heard larger taiplpipe tip can deepen sound. I just don't want to get it too loud and have to back track. Actually doesn't sound too bad now, check it out:

And here is one holding the camera below the rocker pannel and revving it:

Maybe I should leave well enough alone? BTW my exhaust setup is shown in my gallery.

I just replaced my Flow thru (Bully Dog) muffler with a Flowmaster 50 series yesterday. The difference is quite impressive. My 7.3 had a tinny flutter to it when WOT and a chirping sound at idle. Now it has a deep tone at idle and WOT, and the tinny and chirping diesel sounds have gone away. It sounds really good. The tone is definately deeper now and the drone inside the Excursion has diminished to a low throb.

Good Luck!

My ride, "The Land Shark" 2003 Excursion, 7.3, 4X4, Edge Juice with Attitude, Bully Dog Intake, Modified Bully dog exhaust (Flowmaster now), with 69K miles..

Wow, I just further modded my stock muffler to cut about a 3 square inch hole in the backing plate immediately behind the perforated tube that the incoming pipe feeds into, so now it is like a straight through. It sounds pretty loud and very deep toned. I really like it, but probably too loud. Maybe if I attach a flange and tailpipe it would tone it down just enough. Only other thing is it is 2.25 pipe to the muffler but these perforated tubes inside the muffler are only 2 inch.

Hey, I can get a Flowtech Raptor muffler for $20. Looks like a nice straight through perforated tube, prob with packing. Maybe should go that route and lose the stock restrictive muffler. Would make it easier to install tailpipe anyway. Or might it be too loud?

You might as well straight pipe it if you go that way. Actually, for $20, it's probably cheaper to add that instead huh? It will be loud though.

Best of luck. It's amazing.... I've been trying to quiet down my Excursion. I guess being 37 with a wife and two kids (all with red hair and green eyes!) has worn me out. I like it quiet now!

I've had it quiet too long. My local auto shop gave me some 2" id flex pipe for free. I ut a 20 inch piece and opened the hole enough to push it in and get it firmly against the tube inside, then put a clamp on it to hold it in place. Now the exhaust goes through the 20 inch perforated pipe, and another 20 inces of flex pipe and dumps just in front of the axle. Still some drone. Still pretty loud. I like it, but may have to get longer pipe. Need a hard pipe to go out the side. May have to move muffler forward a foot too so I can clear the tire with the side pipe. We'll see. Going to scroung dumpsters behind auto shops for pipe. Why put new pipe on rusty old system?

I have a single 3 " w/ flowmaster on my 70. It has a 3.5" tip and it is real deep. I can still hear it but i don't have a radio to compare.

Well I did it. Got the Raptor. Yes it's loud exit out under bed. Added short side tailpipe, quieted slightly. Am going to put the OEM tailpipe back on with a pipe extension. That should quiet it a slight bit more. But the best thing is the sound is great. Much better than my rigged setup. Love it.
