I have bone stock 460 EFI engine in a truck I am parting out. 140 on the clock and no smoke, rattles , ticks or knocks. It is in a 88 F350 4x4 Cab and Chassis It has a factory oil cooler mounted up by the radiator. I know nothing about these engines but have been told the later blocks were thicker walled and BB chevy's it's the older blocks are better. What is the comp suppose to be on these and are there any stand out positives about these? Is it possibly a 4 bolt?Heads have a good or bad rep?Cast or forged rods,crank?...what's the deal???
crank is cast but good to around 800 horse, block is good to 800 horse as well even with the stock 2 bolt mains. there was only 1 4bolt main and that was the scj in 1970/71. overbore capability is just the luck of the draw. theyll all go .060 over, some will go .080, and a select few will go as far as .140 over, but no casting numbers are really better than any others. rods are good to around 500 horse properly prepped, and usually break in the middle. aftermerket rods are good insurance 460s are good solid engines and dont break very often (just do your basic maintinence on them and youre usually good for as long as you can afford the gas). the stock efi system is a limiting factor as far as performance goes, but you can swap to a carb top end pretty easily.
