I don't know that the reason Brian doesn't like synthetics is because they are too slick, but rather the other reason I pointed out is in some full synthetics the additives don't perform well. Also, FWIW, Brian had a good bit of input when Schaeffer's was developing their trans fluid. From what I understand, Schaeffer's listened to what Brian had to say about the fluid from an end user standpoint. It's nice to know that they take the customer's expierence and opinion into consideration when developing a product.
I went to the distributor for the schaefer's oil. $117.00 for a 5 gallon bucket. Now
my question is; Is this fluid worth the cost since:
1. I don't and haven't towed or hauled anything.
2. My truck is stock, no performance mods.
3. I use my truck mostly for road trips.
4. 184,000 miles on trans, no work has been done other than service fluid and filter.
don't mind spending the $$$ but if its not going to be extremely beneficial wouldn't mercon suffice?
Jeff
I just learned that Advance Auto Parts Online has Valvoline Dexron III/Mercon Part# VV353 $0.95 a quart. Order online for in-store pickup and get an extra 10% off with "C1107" promo code.
After seeing this I am strongly leaning towards taking advantage of that offer, especially seeing how I don't do any towing and the Mobile 1, which is in the rebuilt trans now, is $7 a quart!!!!
Would this be penny wise but pound foolish?
I'm sure I'm just overlooking it, but can someone give me the link to the trans fluid change procedure for the truck?
Lots of guys have gone full syn including Mobil1 ATF (my personal favorite) and Royal Purple, to name a few. I'm about to change mine out to full syn as well, just because I've always gone syn and never had problems. YMMV.
You can't beat Redline ATF. Redline has more antiwear additive than most any other brand. Also has the ester base oil, which is the only base oil that will withstand the heat of jet turbines.
I am running Redline D4 ATF in the Aerostar and the motorhome. F150 is manual tranny and has Specialty Formulations ATF, but has also had Redline D4 in it

Jeff, MERCON will suffice but the advantages of Schaeffer's will pay for itself. If I am not mistaken Ford suggest changing the tranny fluid every 30K. In your situation you can easily double that with Schaeffer's. When the time comes and you think you need to change it, just send a sample into the lab and they will tell you wether or not it needs to be changed.
I ran Schaeffer's in my stock tranny and my new one. I tow our 5'er alot so I want the best. If Brian from BTS uses it, question answered. The stuff smells but has worked great.....!!
compare the technical data sheets - you'll see which is better

Great idea. As I am in a quandry over what fluid to use and have a real hard time believing that Mobil 1 or any synthetic is worth the price difference ($140 vs. $20 for 20 quarts), I may be best off sending a sample of the Mobil 1 fluid currently in the trans and see if it even needs to be changed yet.
I guess trying to loosen the drain plug just enough to let some drain out is the best way to obtain the sample?

Or pull the return line going into the rear of the tranny. With the engine off enough should drip out for a sample....
I use Amsoil universal trans fluid. I haven't had any problems at all. The transmission shifts great, without any slippage. I'm suprised that some still feel syn. atf is to slippery. I would'nt use anything but synthetic in my engine and transmission.
