I have a rolling chassis out of a 1966 F100 that has a 390 in it. It has been sitting quite awhile after the previous owner rebuilt it using many Edelbrock performer parts. I am trying to use the starter to turn the motor over(it turns fairly easily by hand) but the starter will not turn over the motor. I thought it might be a bad starter so I replaced it. When the starter is out of the truck I can turn it over with jumper cables, but when I install it, it won't turn over. I do not have any electrical hooked up right now as I am waiting for a new wiring harness. Am I doing something wrong? Please help.....
you say no elctrical is hooked up. ground the motor(390)
to your battery which your are using. Starter problems
are usually something poeple smack themselves in the
head for when they find out the real problem. I
spent 2 1/2 hours with my neighbour who is a class 3 engineer
trying to figure out why my starter wouldn't go, then
it was just a burnt wire in the end.Smack
I now have power to turn over the starter(bad ground I think) but I am trying to use a remote starter switch and can not get it to turn over unless I jump the solenoid(which heats up my switch and doesn't deliver enough power). The solenoid is also brand new. Keep in mind no other electrical or wiring harness hooked up. Why can't I make this work? Thanks again.
The solenoid is grounded, but I am trying to use a remote starter switch, the kind with two alligator clips and a handle with a button. I assumed it would be used with one clip on the battery side of the solenoid and the other on the S terminal of the solenoid(which is where I believe the ignition switch plugs on), but nothing happens. The only way I have been able to make the starter turn over is by jumping the solenoid with the two clips which send all the power THROUGH my switch...which gets hot due to the small wires. Maybe I am not understanding the ignition system to this point...Shouldn't the solenoid activate when power is put to the S terminal? I know they make these remote starters for a reason but I obviously don't know enough to make it work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to use this dumb thing? Thanks again for your knowledge and patience while I am still learning.
Maybe the battery cables are not hooked up correctly to the solenoid. Try swapping the in/out (+) cables on the relay around and make sure the starter is grounded directly to the battery (just clamp a jumper cable unto the starter body from the battery).
Looking down from the fender the relay should look like this:
