I am having issues with my starter. I try turning over the truck and I just get a click. All the lights come on and stay on, they dim when I try starting the truck but the motor doesnt turn over. Where is the starter so I can check to see if the wires are all Ok, or if I just need a new starter.
It's on the passenger side, down next to the oil pan. Did you check the connections to the battery itself and is the battery fully charged and in good condition?
What is the vehicle? The '95 F150 listed in your profile? For that truck, a starter will set you back 100-150 bucks depending on where you get it and if you go new or rebuilt. Check the other things I mentioned first, if you haven't already done so.
the starter depending on brand can cost from $36-$112... you may also want to check your starter relay located on the passenger fender well!!!!! this will make you think your starter is bad.. it also costs alot less!
How can I tell if its the relay thats bad? When I try starting the truck, the click is comming from the passanger fender well. Is that possibly telling me its just the relay??
If you hear the click, then the relay is probably working. If there isn't sufficient power the relay will still be able to activate to a certain degree, but you won't be able to spin the starter.
Yep, check your cables first then the solonoid on the fender well. They only cost about $15. Mine went bad once and it would either click several times then start or just crank slowly. I made the mistake of changing the starter first, then finding out it was the relay.
the relay is still going to click tryingto close the contacts but the may be pitted enoght or the relay just may not be stong enough to carry over the draw to turn over the starter. the best way with out spending money is to pull the starter , and with a pair of jumper cables check it off the battery. if it engauges then the starter is good.
Thanks everyone, it was the starter that was dead, original one with 120k miles on it and it looks as if the power lead on the selenoid had gone bad and fried up the selenoid. $95 for a new one after a $40 core at Advanced Auto. I replaced it and everything is working great! Although I found I am having a coolant leak somewhere that I have to find. Green coolant was dripping down the wires to the starter.
