hey i have a 92' 300 and for a week or so my front belt has been screaming and squealing really loud especially when i get into the gas...ive put 2 kinds of lubricant on the belt and im just waiting for my alternator or something to break but it hasnt,,,, has anyone had this problem and what can i do to shut it up?
does it have a spring loaded tensioner? its probably coming from a pulley if the belt lubricant didnt help. maybe an idler pulley. you might be able to narrow the problem down with an automotive stethescope.
Put ( pour) some water on the belt and see if the squeal stops, if it does replace the belt as it is glazed. Check the belt tension to make sure the belt tensioner is not too loose, it is adjustable for more tension. It is also possible the tensioner is bad allowing the belt to be loose. If that doesn't fix it--check the rotating (Alt, smog pump, power steering pump) components for a bad bearing, by listening to them through some kind of stethoscope ( screw driver--length of wood dowel- steel rod) placed against the unit and put to your ear. BE CAREFUL WHEN DOING THE ABOVE---DON"T GET INTO THE MOVING PARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my friends a mechanic and he gave me some kind of valve lube or something that he got from work to put on it and it stopped for a while but now it does it when i let off the gas only so im thinking it could be something with the tensioner?? thanks for the input
I had the same problem on my '92 F-150 I6. First it was the tensioner(OE-14 years old and 99,000 miles) changed it, then it went away. 4 days ago it was squalling horrible. Checked everything..thought it was the power steering pump, it wasn't, Shop told me it was the belt and they changed it, with a new Motorcraft belt, no more squeal..Everyone's right, check the tensioner and if nothing else, change the belt.
If the belt needs replacing replace it. While it's off you can rotate your pullies by hand searching for a bad bearing in one of the components. When my air pump siezed it destroyed my $40 belt. I had to buy a $50 belt that was short enough to bypass the air pump so that I could go buy a $60 air pump. Sheesh! And then of course another $40 belt. $60 air pump = $150 worth of parts.
thanks, it stopped for a good week or two but it just came back today and im just getting a new belt because everyone has said the tensioner is fine so it must be the belt.
Clean the pulleys with sandpaper they probably have a glaze to begin with, Now with the junk you put on there it definately has build up on it, A new belt will help but if you don't get the crud off it will ruin the new belt and 3000 miles it might start again!!
+1 for throwing belt dressing in the trash!!!
