Code readers

My truck was cutting out pretty bad this morning coming into work and the SES light came on so I was thinking about getting a code reader.

Its strange that it only seems to cutout when its raining.

I noticed that some say they will read codes for cars and light trucks, others say that they will also clear the codes, and still other say that they will stream data on fuel pressure and other stuff. Any comments?

Ebay has them from $8 to $100

"They probably won't read the Powerstroke"
rbaker - I don't understand. Doesn't the Powerstroke use one of the standard OBD protocols? If not what protocol does it use. I know my mechanic's code reader reads standard protocols and he has read mine before, including some of the transmission codes.

Definately pretty cool..and pricey ($341 plus a laptop). But thats not a bad idea. I cant help but think though that I could buy a real lowend laptop for $341, write my own software read loop, parse the OBD data, import to spreadsheet and graph it.

Doug,

Its not so much that the PSD is not in OBDII code it is its just in a different language from the standard OBDII. If I start sprakin ze duetch and habla espanol as well as hundern ze durden, yes, you can read it, but might not understand it, and may misinterpret it. Look On ebay for a used superchips/bully dog/edge DOWNLOADER they will all read 7.3 diesel code and can be had pretty for cheap.
