I am in need of a 390 crank to finishing converting my 360. I dont have alot of money to spend so my only guess would be to goto a junk yard. Are junk yard cranks going to be reliable? What exactly am i looking for(the diff. between a good crank and a bad one); are there any pictures of F.E. cranks so that i know the differences between them all? Also, im sure that i will probly need to take it to a machine shop; what would most likley have to be done to the crank? Finally, does anyone know what i should expect to pay for the crank at a junk yard, and for the machining? I dont want to get ripped so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thnx.
390 cranks can be identified by the casting number. Some of the popular ones are 2U, 3U, 2UA, C6AE-C, C6AE-A, C5AE-C and C4AE-D or C. Check the crank for major gouges in the journals and also check for heavy wear around the trust bearing area where it contacts the counterweight. You can safely grind a 390 crank .040 under on the rods and mains without worry. Also check the keyways on the front snout to make sure they aren't wollered out. The crank flange can also be used to identify one by having either a square or half moon notch to distinguish it from a 352/360 crank but I can't remember which one is which and the 360 crank I have in the shed has both so somebody else might be able to help there. The going rate it seems to have a crank ground under is about $90.
