dipstik leaking oil

my f450 superduty has a steady drip oil leak that appears to be coming from the base of the dipstik or around the hexagon fitting attached to the oil pan where the dipstik goes in the pan.are there o rings in this area tahat could be leaking?the engine is a powerstroke

Thumbs up Take your time. You can stop that leak.

Very important that you be careful with the inside of the pan half of the fitting. You can unbolt the dipstick and get it ready to pull out of the pan fitting but don't pull the stick until you get ahold of the through-pan fitting with a light touch with vice-grips or wire or tape or a wire-tie. When I undid and pulled the dipstick my nut fell of the outside and my inside part fell into the pan. You pretty much need to pull the pan to get the fitting out and put the new one on the inside of the pan. If you're careful and you keep a good hold on the fitting you can clean it all up with brake kleen and the slip a new o-ring into the inside of the pan by just going down the fitting and through the hole and into place then applying the gray sticky glue. Great stuff. It will hold the fitting and keep it from leaking with a new o-ring.

You can relpace the inner o-ring without removing the pan. It just take alittle time and patience.
First remove the starter, then remove the dipstick tube(upper), clean the adapter off with brake clean, then (most important) using a coat hanger, bend a small V at the bottom of the hanger and push it into the dipstick adapter leaving enough of the hanger to tie to the frame of the truck (check that is the V is inside of the adapter and won't pull out easily, trust me on this! ) Remove the outside nut, clean the adapter off again(inside the pan and outside the pan), change out the o-ring (put alittle silicone on the new o-ring so it stays inplace), CAREFULLY reinstall the outside nut (very easy to cross thread, if you are trying to hurry!)fight to remove the hanger you pushed into the adapter, reinstall upper dipstick tube. Drain oil & brake clean mixture, change filter, refill oil, start truck check for leaks !

Gotta work on my dipstick flange leak this weekend and am just trying to get prepared with a few questions first. When removing the dipstick tube, does it just pull out or screw out of the adaptor? If using the International kit with the gasket that Fat Diesel had pictures of a while back, does the gasket go on the flange on the inside of the pan or outside of the pan?

Thanks

Kelly

Have you checked the oil gallery plug in the back of the head?

It's probably diesel leaking out of something up top and making its way to the back of the valley to the drain hole and then down the back of the block by the starter. It looks like dirty oil because it is cleaning off the engine as it goes. The fuel pump will do that and a few other things will do it, too. The fuel pump starts to leak out of the weephole when the pump nears the end of its life. It can leak for some time and still keep working.
