Temperature Gauges

I know where the OE gauge or switch goes as they call it now (to the right of distributor as you are looking at the engine) but is there some where else I can put an aftermarket sender.
My 351W had a plug in the thermostat housing in which I put it but this 302 does not.

I tried plumbing the one hole with a tee but I remember somewhere hearing or reading they both had to be in the water flow.

Is this an electrical sender, or a mechanical sender. I ask because electrical sender will require ground, where as mechanical won't.
