Whats a decent antivirus/spyware program?

I think I remember this being discussed once but I had no luck finding it.

I had norton last year and switched to mcafee this year, both of them SUCK. They were like viruses themselves, slowed my internet speed, and used a ton of memory makeing my computer slow to a crawl.

Im looking for something new, what have you guys had luck with?

I use SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, Comodo BoClean and AdAware. For antivirus I use Avira AntiVir. And for a firewall I use Zone Alarm

I use the exact same programs as jake and a couple others.

I agree with you though and im glad you said it. Norton is the worst program ive ever experienced. Im being serious when i say that. It truly is. It puts the whole computer on lock down and as you said slows it as a result. That can all be adjusted. I still will never use the program though till they get it right. I dont know anybody that needs that much security that norton provides. Maybe like a parent it could be useful but im pretty sure theres better programs.

Still though like i said i use the same programs as jake and i have been for some time now. They are pretty good but they arnt perfect. I dont think there is a bulletproof perfect program that will kill viruses and stop spyware/adware. I know that theres some spyware on my computer right now and none of the programs detect it. And yes they are all up to date.

I think the best bet is prevention. You learn what to click on and what not to click on. Sounds silly but its the truth.

Doesn't your ISP offer one for your monthly connection fee ?

Mine does.

AVG is good though.

If only the people around my house would understand that. I have a couple of my own machines, but I was hopping to find a program for the "family computer" that everyone else uses. Its faily modern 3ghz p4 and a gig or ram, norton was the worst thing i used, it wouldn't turn off. At idle it ate enought resources to drag the machine down bad.

It seems atleast once every 4-6 weeks the "family computer" has cought something nasty and I have to reinstall windows to make it go away.

Stay away from Norton.

It's a virus in it's own right.

I use AVG. It's free and it blows Norton out of the water.

My isp offerd a stripped down version of norton internet security, I "upgraded" to the full version and it blew.

I've heard about AVG from people before, do you use the free version or the full version?

I've used Adaware SE personal for awhile, it finds about three hundred million things on their machine but never the one that kills it.

The free version of AVG is fine. The free version will detect things norton won't without hogging resources.

I also like AVG. The free version doesn't have some of the stuff as the $$$ version, but works well. I recently bought a laptop with the 90 day Norton and I hated it. I have a couple other PC's and have a wireless home network setup and with Norton I tried forever to access my other PCs and printer and could not get it to work even though I tried everything. Norton wouldn't allow it for some reason. Uninstalled it and installed AVG and now works great. I also use a program from my cable internet company "Charter Communications" which works great. I'm not sure how well that company is used Nationwide though.

I use CA Internet Security it also included K9 web protection (child monitor). I got it at Tiger Direct. CA bought out Tiny personal firewall. It works great, just miss the running activity monitor. Love watching all the activity in and out. I back it up with free scan at micro trend.

Free avast! and the free version of Zone Alarm. I have not had a pop-up or successful attempt on my computer in three years.
I also don't visit questionable sites, ****, etc.
I now have a wireless router with firewall also, and that really cut down on my notices of attempts on my computer.

Dont mean to hijack this thread, but how many of you keep stuff on your comps that would be worth someone "hacking" into your computer? I just use mine for research and the occasional video game. I think my parents use theirs for personal finance stuff but am not sure. I would think it would be more wise to use a computer without internet access for that application. I mean, thats an extremely basic program. One could use an outdated computer that is reliable, keep it off the internet, and use that for the finance stuff. That way nobody could hack into it. A program like that would not require much from a computer, even a very old one.

I agree with having a second PC for financial programs and personal confidential files. PC's are extremely cheap nowadays and you don't need a fast or new one for most programs. And yes, don't hook it up to the internet. The only thing you really would be vulnerable to hacking is if you do a lot of online shopping, but a good firewall and antivirus/spyware program helps that. One of biggest troubles is if you like to download internet files when searching.
