Dont mean to hijack this thread, but how many of you keep stuff on your comps that would be worth someone "hacking" into your computer? I just use mine for research and the occasional video game. I think my parents use theirs for personal finance stuff but am not sure. I would think it would be more wise to use a computer without internet access for that application. I mean, thats an extremely basic program. One could use an outdated computer that is reliable, keep it off the internet, and use that for the finance stuff. That way nobody could hack into it. A program like that would not require much from a computer, even a very old one.
My computer knows nothing important about me, I do all my banking and import tasks the old fashion way.
The main thing for me is I have a ton of photos, movies, and music on my machine, I spend hours after a windows install loading and resetting everything the exact way I had it before.
I just want to have a decent program to keep annoying spyware and viriuses out. The occasional system scan is much easier then a complete windows reinstall.

My first thought would be
1st: Remote access is turned off
2nd:Good router with firewall
3rd: Good firewall and anti-virus
4th: Not opening mail from anyone unknown. ( I won the Austrialian lottery )
5th: No **** sites
6th: Keep on top of all security updates from microsoft, apple
7th: Keep on top of all security updates from router, firewall and anti-virus
8th: Don't let subscription lapse
9th: Set up files are password protected. ( not a common password Alpha Numeric the longer the better.)
10th: Port testing check to insure non used ports are closed, better if they hidden and closed.
11th: Run an annomous proxy.
12: check weekly with a free good anti-virus scan to back up your own anti-virus. To insure it is not comprimised.
Non of the above completely stops a true hacker, it just slows them down. Only way to stop a hacker is never go online.

I always used the stuff offered by my ISP AT&T/SBC Yahoo and was very happy with it. Got a new Dell 2 months ago and it came with free 30-day Norton. After 30 days I uninstalled Norton and tried to put SBC stuff back in. Come to find out SBC stuff is not compatible with Vista yet (they're working on it--yea!). This is a scam between Dell & Microsoft & Norton to keep you using Norton. Computer offered alternatives, so I chose Norton and it gave me a 90-day free trial. After that, don't know what I'll do.
