Weird bogging problem,,,,,

I went to the track last night with my new tires (aquired from econodrag and didn't do to well. These tires hook unbelieveably. The problem is when I launch it will throw me back hard, then the engine wants to die then it kicks back in. Any ideas??? I'm thinking float adjustment.

Holley 770 street avenger
aeromotive 150GPH electric fuel pump
Holley pressure regulator
Fuel pressure stays at 7psi constantly.
I was going to try to set the pressure down a pound or two but I forgot my allen wrench.
Thanks

I had that prob with my 70,I'd stick my foot into
it it would kick me in the pants, choke, then lay some
rubber, it ran rich becuase the float bowl level some
one said, Advancing the timing got me around this.cause everytime
I touch a carb a spring shoots out of some where

That's funny. Retarding the timing actually seemed to help a little. Still looses tons of power. My 60 foot times were at a best of 2.0 but some were as bad a 2.4. Never spun a tire.

Rat, does your fuel line come right from the regulator to the carb ? Sometimes you need a fuel log to help the bowls stay full of fuel. What I mean is, there may be eough pressure, but not enough volume of fuel. Does a 770 SA have slosh tubes on the secondary jets ? If you launch hard enough, all of the fuel in the secondary bowl runs away from the jet......I think holley calls them 'jet extensions' DF

I'm not sure about that DF. It is a dual feel 4160 carb with two metering blocks. Not much of a carb expert.

You could be running rich as well. Too much pump shot.

All I can think of is the Car Craft test with a 55 Chevy (800 double pumper, 406 SBC). They were suprised at the end of the test how little of a pump shot they needed to get the best 60' time. They had problems all day with engine "laying down" 100' from the start line.

When it pushes you back, it is probably sloshing fuel out the vent into the bore, causing a rich condition. try vent extensions, or one of those truck avenger carbs, or maybe a lower float level. With constant fuel pressure, you should be able to get away with a low front float.

I'll try and lower the floats a little. I am at wide open throttle when I leave the line so its not an accelerator pump problem.

Since the only thing that was changed was the tires, creating a harder launch, I suspect the guys are right on the money in that your problem is fuel slosh. Its not uncommon to empty the bowels on really hard launchs. Holley has a "trick kit" that corrects this, I used one on my Cougar that had the same problem and it fixed it. The kit runs @50 bones if memory serves and had sorts of extra doodads. Somebody else who raced had some sort of fuel foam or something in his bowel to keep the fuel where it belonged, but I have no idea how this works with the float, and don't know where you can get it. I bet the trick kit will fix you up though~

Sean........ I told you bout' dem der tars..... They are really sticky when you get them heated up. You now have the full meal deal for f100 traction (ECONODRAG STYLE) . Who would though that $100.00 worth of parts would make a F100 hook up like that? Get you fuel delivery problem fixed and lets see if you can get to the 1.90 60 ft times. Too bad we are not closer.....I would let you use my 750 mighty demon on that thing. Keep us updated. See Ya Tony

I don't see 1.9 60 ft times a problem. It was bogging a little on the 2.0 run so if I get this problem fixed I might see 1.8's. I definitely need more gear. I am not even close to spinning those tires. It feels like it would take another 390 to get them to budge. I am going tonight to make another run at it and then its going into storage for a year while I am in Korea.

Good luck with the truck Rat. Make sure when you store it you put moth ***** in the truck outside the truck and anywhere else you might need them. Moth ***** keep more than just moths away thats for sure. Just a little FYI.

Oh yeah, I shouldn't say "stored". Dad will be keeping it in his garage and driving it once a week. Still getting some moth ***** though.
