My parents raised pits when they were married and I was a kid in the late 70's. We didn't have any problems at all with them. They were good loving dogs. I remember when the female died in the early 80's the male died about 3 weeks later from what I think was just a broken heart. He was miserable without her and lonely.

I think the media gave them a bad rap. I read somewhere that Labs account for more emergency room visits then any other breed.

an FYI for all, from page 49 June 2007 issue of Trailor life mag,due to "claim's" the following are "BLACKLISTED" at RV park's nation wide, btw, I own a park,Alaskan Malamutes,Akitas,American Staffordshire Terriers,Boxers,Chows,Doberman Pinshers,German Shephards,Great Danes,Perro de Canarios, Pit Bulls,Wolf hybrids,or any dog that has any of the above breeds in its lineage, now you ask why,According to the Insurance Institute, libility claims rose from $250 million in 1996 to $310 million in 2001,and thats 100's of million's EACH year, bottom line here is if your dog on the above list causes a claim to be filed, "WE" could lose our total coverage on our park,in other word's they will drop us,at this time here in florida it is next to impossible to buy RV park insurance...."Please" dont go camping with the above dog's,board them while your gone, and also "KEEP THE ONE'S NOT ON THE LIST UNDER YOUR CONTROL AT ALL TIME'S",you are simply to close to the people in the other campsites to be camping with "ANY' dog with an "ATTITUDE" no matter what the breed ,a dog is something you add to YOUR life, NOT everyone around you.

I agree thats why I no longer take my dogs camping. That last time I did that was with my yellow lab who was very viscious to anyone near the trailer and would have attacked them had she not been chained. Unfortunatley certian breeds are taken advantage of and thus ruins it for the rest of us, as irresponsible gun owners have done. Because of that I have to carry extra lability insurance now because of my breed and some insurance carriers will not insure homeowners because of breed. I recieved notice of a list similar to yours but included even more like rotts, st. bernards and mastiffs. Since I already owned my dog when changes were made I can keep this one, but no more after this.

......... you told it like it is,far to many have no idea that some homeowner's insurance company's also will do what your's did, everyone reading this just might want to see if your covered just in case, big diffrence between a dog snaping at someone saying leave me alone while i'm eating or quit pulling my tail or ear's and a dog that just keep's biteing tell someone is DEAD!!,having a killing machine for a pet does not square, btw, i'm suprised that any lab would act like that, lab's that have been here were ***** cat's,had a chocolate lab in for the winter season and all she did was sleep most of the time.( good grief,I see they took that word out about the CAT,that word was not used in a BAD way, lighten up already.)

ruh roh.

The pit bull topic has been hashed over many many many times on the local boards here. The general consensus is that the dogs attack because:
  • Pit bulls are an aggressive breed
  • Owners do not watch the animal close enough
  • People do things that make the dog nervous

The pit bull is a naturally aggressive dog and then when people do things to make it nervous something bad is bound to happen.

..... Dog bite's in general, the aggressive breed's to be specific, the insurance company's keep vary close tab's on payout's and flagged those breed's as causeing most of but not all of the issues, note the $310 milion paid out in 2001,that's a whole lot of biteing going on,will call my underwriter next week and see if I can get figure's more current.

As I am sure you know, a dog won't always do what it is trained to do. Neither will children. I have taught my kids to never touch a dog unless they are told by myself or the dog owner/handler that it is okay. Do they do as they are told? Most of the time, but they forget in their excitement.

I've yet to see a dog that is 100% in following of commands. I've yet to see a kid that is 100%. I don't trust either one.

99.9% of h/o insurance companies will give you a thirty day notice to get rid of dog once they find out you have a pit.

The remaining .1% will write the policy excluding dog liability.

im being fascicious, its really about 90% or so. I broker through 15 different companies and none will write with a pit or a chow.

im sure its pretty much standard nationwide about pits.

like i said useless.

I am having a hard time getting a new homeowner policy because I own a dog that looks like he might be part German Shepard. I've had him eight years and he has never even growled at anyone. Weighs about 70 pounds and tries to sleep on my lap.

I was more afraid of my father's 14 pound American Eskimo (Spitz) than I would ever be of my mutt. But, shepards are on the list.....

Meanwhile, I'll stick with the crappy policy I have with the even crappier agent until I can convince someone to write me a new policy. Better than getting on the state homeowner plan.
