hit a dog

today on my way to school, i hit a dog. it really sucked cause it looked like a nice dog. it came out of a driveway and ran out right infront of my highboy, stupid drum brakes, I was barely able to even slow it down before i straddled that little pup, must of hit it with an axle or something. im at least glad that it didn't have to suffer. what made it even worse was the fact that I thought it belonged to a girl i really liked, it wasn't (i just searched all over the school to tell her) but it still sucks.

Well.....It sucks to hit an animal, but it's them or you. If you skid, swerve or take other evasive action there's a good chance you'll hit something much more resilient than a critter. It should have looked both ways before crossing.

I have never liked people that do NOT take responsible care for their pets. They don't (the animals) know the dangers around them, it is up to the people who raise them to take appropriate measures to protect them.

But Dogs, more than any other pet I can think of, are the most loving and loyal of them all. They are the most forgiving - and that I think - is what makes it sting the most when one is hurt or killed needlessly. Granted - they are ingenious: when you think they can't get out of a kennel or pen; they will find a way to do it!

But there are many people that don't deserve a dog as a family member in the first place, because they just don't take care of them.

Buddy - IT AIN'T ON YOUR HEAD. That puppy was running loose, and it was not your fault. I wish it hadn't been, and I'm sure you do too.

But it wasn't properly kept in its yard....

It just was not your fault. It wasn't the dogs fault either.

I guess the best way to think of it is that God called it back to him.

It still hurts like everything- I know. I know you didn't want it like that.

But understand - there was nothing you could have done to stop it.

At times, things just happen like that.

Again-
It ain't your fault

I know how you feel.....but get this. I ran over a cocker spaniel once in a 79 Datsun truck. The dog was chasing a jogger. I ran over that dog and he rolled over under my truck. The jogger said the dog wasn't his so I picked the dog up, since it had a license tag on it, took it to a vet that was open after regular hours. The dog looked pretty bad.
But to make a long story short, the dog was not hurt except for being bruised up. That was great news to me. But even better...they traced the license tag on the dog and the police made a visit to the owner.
It's a shame animals get hit but it's either them or you swerving to avoid them and wreck.

I've had worse. I was driving and night and a coon ran infront of me. i didnt swerve cause i didnt wanna wreck. he stopped in front my my truck and stood up BAM... his head macked my differentual. pretty sick. smelled horrible. i has to pressure wash what was left of him on my differentual.

its not your fault, blame the drum brakes. also it might not be the owners fault, maybe he jumped the fence, or chewed thru his leash.

once a buddy of mine swirved across 4 lanes of a highway to hit a damn skunk! we were in his moms minivan bacuse 6 or so of us when to a haunted house thing around this past halloween. smelled like death. the thing got hit by the front right tire, somehow got kicked up into the wheel well, then got run over by the back tire. guts all over the front right wheel well. smelled like none other. we all thought it was pretty funny. but i felt bad after i hit that coon.

once i hit a bird and it cracked my grille. my grille is made out of that plastic like crap that comes out of the factory. i was mad. had to get a pair of pliers and pull it out. feathers all over the place. sucked. i didnt feel bad for that bird.

Consider yourself lucky, in fact.

My EX ran over all most every one of her pets - except the one that made messes in my house while I was away.

I suppose she thought the house was supposed to smell like that, but anyway...

Never thought to restrain them, never made sure they were inside when she drove out, thought it was a game when they chased her car....

One after another - some of them very cool puppies. It was a helluvva waste

What blows my mind is that SHE NEVER LEARNED ANYTHING FROM IT!

There are people who don't deserve pets. They kill them, sooner or later

My dog climbed up my fence and desided he wanted to walk it like a tightrope to escape. He managed to make it to the buisy street by my house and end up getting ran over. My next door neigbor seen him and took him home. I end up rushing him to the vet and they said it would cost 5000 to fix him up and that he will never walk again. We didnt have that kind of money so we thought about maybe putting him down. The vet sugested that we try a pain patch and let it heal on its own. My dog had to stay in his kennel for a month untill it healed. He is now good as new only thing long term is that he gained a lot of weight from being confind.

Greywolf,
Your right about pet owners that take care of their pets. They don't deserve animals. But it's not the pet's fault because their owner is an idiot.

I drive to high school at around 6:30am and i live out in the country with lots of hills, curves, and no shoulders. I would speed up if i were to hit a small animal so it would suffer less. Out here you can't swerve or you'll end up in a pond or a sink hole. Rather kill the animal than risk my life.

I hit a deer one morning last fall it was running beside me as i entered a turn where you can only do like 5mph so i accelerated to out run him out of the turn.He ran into the woods and came out infront of me. He cut infront of me about 200 and i had accelerated to about 40mph and he just walked out infront of me and i hit him. The bumper pushed him under the Dana out front and the driverside tire hit his shoulder and ramped him. a real big jolt. Didn't hurt the truck and it was better than swerving and hitting a tree on oneside and a couple of cows on the other.

Dad was still home i called him and he came by about 3-5 min later. The deer was motionless from the shoulders up but was running on it broken hind legs pivoting on it's head that was laying on the ground so dad Shot him behind the ear with the Colt .45 and we threw him in the ditch. We checked the truck nothing wrong so Dad went to work and i went to school.

Animals do wierd thing when they get hit.

But it's either you or him.

DT 466man i have the same moring routine, driving on old country roads at 7am, hauling ***** on old country roads cause im late. havent seen any animals crossing though. if they do their lucks ran out. swirving would be easy though. corn feild on one side and a few dozen cows on the other side. I'd rather mack a deer going 70 than a cow though. but driving thru a corn field isnt a first ,once i was bored senceless and decided to pull off the road into a corn field at about 2 in the morning a week or so after harvest going about 45 mph. it was kinda fun i guess.

Unhappy I know how you feel

I know how you feel. A few years ago I was plowing a dead end street in the am. Kids were home from school at around 6am and I was driving down the street with my blade down and someones kid was playing with a golden retriever. I had seen the dog on my first pass and went slower on the second pass. The kid was throwing a ball and he ended up throwing it in the street. My truck at the time was a DRW Stake Body with a load of sand. The dog ran into my drivers side door and slid under the truck and went under the rear wheels and seperated the dog into two parts. It freaked me out as well as the young boy who had been playing with the dog. It brought tears to my eyes. The father of the boy was very appoligetic. It stuck in my head for a few months. At least it was only a replacable animal and not a child. That's one of the sad things that happens in life. It's only human to be bothered by it. Give it time and you'll forget all about it.

also if you guys hit a deer, would you keep it? a buddy of mine hit one a few weekends ago, didnt hurt hit truck what so ever. hes got a 80 something 250 with a 6.9. hes got a skyjacker 6", 35" boggers, and 4" stacks, sounds pretty mean. i was following him, and he was going a good 70+mph (his speedo doesnt work) and the deer hit the bottom of his bumper, went right under the tire and kinda got shot off the side of the road. its bones were sticking out of its skin and all. pretty sick...! well another buddy of mine wanted to keep it and make some deer jerky. if you guys hit a deer would you turn it into deer jerky?

Schmids, I hear ya about book'n it down the back roads. They post 40mph for no reason and i'm doing 55-65. I see lots of critters on the way to school. Not much corn out this way though so i haven't had the pleasure of driving threw a corn field. Mostly tobacco and Livestock.
I drove threw one on my buddies farm that he grows for a maze in the fall. Some one lost a kid so we went in in his 46 Powerwagon and scared the **** out of that kid. It wasn't the smartest way but it was dark and the truck had spot light on it. The 5 year old thought we were a Space ship with all the spot lights going and a strobe light on top. Pretty funny though.

Must be one of those little Mid-West deer. Hit one out here and it could total the truck if it's older. Then there's always elk to watch out for going to the Coast You'll know if you smack one of those things.
