The 460 is a good engine but a fuel eater when you need HP whereas a diesel will do better in the fuel economy area under load. This is the reason I have 2 diesels.

The 7.3 will use less fuel, especially when towing. Oil changes cost more on the 7.3 due to the amount of oil required but you can go longer between changes so that is almost a wash. If you look at the 460 needing tune ups and a diesel don't, there is a savings there. The 7.3 parts cost a little more then a gas engines but don't seem to fail as often. Add to that the fuel cost generally for diesel is less then gas and you will require less of it, I would go diesel with a manual transmission.

'Diesel with a manual' sounds like my kind of truck!

I have talked to different folks to get different recommendations on gas vs. diesel.....the things they have said against diesel is that the parts are expensive and the oil changes are expensive (more oil).

But it looks like you have put those worries to bed........

Now I just need to compare the two and see which one I like better.

Thank you,
Chris

Chris,

I noticed your location is Denver - make SURE that truck has a turbo on it, or you'll be in the slllloooooowwwwww lane going up any of the hill around there. That 94 IDI, I'm not sure had a turbo from the factory.

1994 was the first year for the "Powerstroke".
They were ONLY available with the Manual transmission for that year.
Look under the hood and it will say in silver outlinded raised letters right in the center "Turbo Diesel".
Also the front fenders will have a small emblem reading "Turbo Diesel"
these will point you to the coveted "Powerstroke" Direct Injection powerplant and is quite indestructable, However it was only was rated at 210 HP.

engine

Benchwrench,

This truck is NOT a powerstroke.

In 1994 ford offered the IDI with and without a turbo for the first half of the year, then switched to the powerstroke at 94.5.

Thanks,
Chris

I change my oil in the older IDI 7.3 i used to own every 3500 miles, and yes they do use more oil close to 3 gallons or so. The older IDI 7.3 could go 100,000 to 150,000 before the injector nozzles needed to be replaced. There around 25.00 to 35.00 each for rebuilts. The fuels pumps are usually around 450.00 to 550.00 for a rebuilt. Both items are not hard to change with a little mechanic knowledge. A shop might change 100.00-150.00 or 1.5 to 2 hrs to time the injector pump.

A little insight on costs for ya.

I noticed that when the Powerstroke first landed it had the wrong dipstick.
I was having a problem with my injectors at the time and come to find out that the dipstick used registered "full" at 10 quarts whereas the right dipstick and the newer PS required 14 quarts. Hence, new injectors.

I don't recall it badged "powerstroke" under the hood, however I do remember it stating "Direct Injection".
Yes, the PSTD was released mid year 1994 and was only mated to the ZF manual trans.
I hope you decide to go with this engine.

I'm going to give the turbo's IDI a shot. It meets my budget, and it drove very well. In addition to that the fuel system has just been gone through.

Thanks for the info,
Chris

Nice

Update,

I purchased the 94 F350 with the turbo IDI and 5-speed. I couldn't be happier. It drives great, and feels really tight.

I will begin my maintenance schedule soon...

Thanks for everyone's input.

Chris
