390 perf. questions

Hi folks!

I've got a question about how to make my pickup run real good, while maintaing gas mileage/reliability, so nothing radical, just some ideas to maybe make him breathe better, run better, whatever.
I got a set of D2TE-AA heads out of a '65 Galaxie 500, as well as the intake and carb.
I've got a mirror "105" block (can't remember the casting nubmers offhand) with the D2TE-AA heads sitting there and the 4-bbl intake with the original rebuilt carb. all i know is it has auto choke.. not sure what the CFM is. Also, the dizzy from the Galaxie's engine had no problems fitting.. good and tight.
I feel like this engine has a lot of potential, but I'm not sure what all needs to be done with it. I'd appreciate any info.

Ladd

P.S. this engine has been running for a year, but I had to kinda do a "hurry-up and get it going before the other truck explodes" job on it, so I'd like to fix the other truck and then tear back into this one.

whoops, forgot a bit of info... the heads have had hardened valves and seats, as well as new guides installed. well, new as of about a year ago... I'm also running manifolds on dual exhaust with no crossover.

Ladd,

Those heads should do fine for a moderate build up. A port job is recommended though. Search this site for onfo.

An after market Aluminum intake will save you 50lbs plus alot of back pain. Edle Performer or Performer RPM are fine.

I feel that headers of some kind are a must. Those stock log manifolds don't breath very well.

These changes should give very good street performance. Forget about any good gas mileage with the FE.

Good luck,
Lee

That was no '65 galaxie engine, it must have been swapped into the galaxie from a truck... D2TE heads weren't installed in vehicles until mid/late 72

390 perf. questions

hello,

thanks for the ideas so far.. and thanks for the info on the heads!
I know I can't expect good mileage with the FE, that's why i just said "maintain".. heh.. I love this old truck to death, but I kinda miss the 32 mpg i was gettin in the lil' mazda pickup. I've heard that headers can be a big pain in the FEs... also from what I've read, it seems like headers would cook that starter in no time, and there doesn't seem to be much room for any kind of heat shield... *shrug* 'course, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks
Ladd

Post 390 perf. questions

Hey, what is your MPG rate on it? If it is anything under 18mpg you arent doing very well if it is stock (with a 4 barel carb) and the the problem with burning your starter with headers just get a the heat sheld insulation for floors, it will protect it fine, the problem comes when you need to replace it, the headers give you limited room to work with. Good luck, oh by the way 450hp and I still get about 17-20mpg.

As previously stated that motor was not an original 65 Gal motor. The starter problems can be fixed with heat sheild and a Ministarter. The Mini's are a bit more, but the added torque and size makes it worth it in my opinion. They also tend to last longer. Assuming all else is stock the intake, heads, and engine. Then you could get some decent mileage considering. But, 18 is a little optimistic in my opinion.

To add to the header discussion. I believe there are "shorty" headers by Sanderson(sp) that fix the starter cooking problem. Cost alittle more but...... I have been running Headman's on my 70 for over 3 years now. Hard to seal at first.

My 2 cents, for mileage use a small 4v like something between
400-500cfm wwith vacuum secondarys, I've gotten up to
18mpg no BS, I double checked each tank when I filled up after
a long drive, IT's like some gremlin stole my 390 and slapped in
an I-6 while I was stopping to take a leak.450hp and 20mpg?
Whats that down hill with the clutch in?

390 perf. questions

hey again,

Well, I'm gettin anywhere from 9-12 mpg depending on how I'm driving... I sure wouldn't complain about seeing 18, or even like 15 or so! I don't think this motor can be called "stock".. i think "Frankenstein" is more like it, but I'm sure it's actually somewhat common... *shrug* From a couple other posts I've seen, i *think* i have the Autolite 4100 carb.. but not 100% sure 'cause I haven't looked at it in a while and I'm not sure the numbers all match. Can't remember the casting numbers on the intake, but as far as I know, it's what came under the same carb that I'm using... I also have the goofy spacer-with-coolant thing goin on. I'll go get the intake and engine #'s in the morning before I head out to do a bit of shopping... any ideas on why i'm getting such low mileage compared to some guys? maybe the carb is bigger that what some are using? i don't know the CFM on this one, (an idea just hit me) but I think he's runnin kinda rich... either that or I've burned a valve...
a touch of black smoke... I'm not sure how to tune this thing properly.. i just trusted the job my grandfather did when we first got this thing running. Which reminds me of another thing... sorry if this is getting long-winded... the truck idles smooth, but when you open the trottle a bit while the truck's in neutral, it'll start acting like it's missing, kinda running rough.. you rev it up a bit higher, and it starts to smooth out again, but when i take off in the truck in gear, i don't notice any kind of roughness or stumble. ideas?

thanks

Ladd

Cant say I believe that one..
Anyway, I have the headman headers and they suck putting them and if you have to replace a starter, lets no talk about that one. But now that theyre on there i love. been there 3 years, no probs. Forget gas milage with a FE stock or modded. I only get about 10mpg now with mods, Probaly got 16 stock. Full size 73 F100

Well, i went outside.. it was a bit chillier than I thought it would be. I got the intake # ok, looks like C5AE948SC. I didn't want to stick around long enough to look for the block #, but I seem to remember it starting with D, which would make sense since they were using them in the 70's..
