Is there any kind of work that can be done to these heads to help them flow better and obviously make me more power? Just out of curiosity since I've been thinking of stuff to spend my money on next.
I just need to know if it's worth doing any work to these heads and if not then that's all.
Depending on how wild you are going, removing as much of the hump in the exhaust port as you can, and opening up the bowls under the valves is the normal thing to do.
Don't polish the intake ports
If you need more flow, a set of CJ valves, at least the exhaust, will help too...
Oh they're just staying on my 390 which I believe is an 8:1 or so engine. I just wanted to know if there is anything that can be done to these heads that's worth spending the money one. Also do I need to take them to a FE person or can I just take them to anyone that can do the head work?
Would it be a good idea to have the intake runners port matched to the intake? I have a holley SD with a holley 750 on top. And headers for the exhaust.
is the 390 stock ? improving head flow really isn't a good hp per buck mod , the stock FE heads have pretty big ports and valves to begin with .
i'd spend the money on headers if you have stock exhaust manifolds and a rv cam
It's stock except headers, Holley SD intake and a Holley 750. I called a local shop yesterday that delt with building FE's and he said that they don't use flat tappet cams anymore because of of how many failures that occur. He told me that I should look in to a set of edelbrock heads, which is why I asked if I can do any work to the stock heads instead. I have a comp 270h, but after what he told me, I think I will return it and save a grand for a hyd. roller set.
Another reason I wanted to consider having work done to the heads, is that 2-3 cylinders leave oil around the threads of the spark plugs, leaving me to believe that oil is leaking somewhere. I don't think it's bad rings cause the cylinder walls look good and that isn't any smoke from the exhuast at least from what I've ever noticed.
the eddy heads are the way to go , by the time you get porting ,big valves and machine work done you are pretty much dollar for dollar at the new heads price .

I agree... once you go that route, the Edels almost break even.
