Ive heard in a shop around here, that some people were milling some 351m pistons 0.23" to reduce its compression size from 1.947" to 1.717" and this way getting a cheap 0 deck height flat top pistons for 400 engines, Is this sane ? What are the consequences ?

The top ring is too high and will overheat. If you had 351M piston blanks, that might work because you could put the ring lands further down on the piston.
Piston blanks are the unfinished castings or forgings that undergo final machining to make a piston. I don't know where you could get these, or how much it would cost to make a finished piston, but it will probably cost more than purchasing the right pistons.
i am glad to hear that milling a 351 piston down is an option to make a flat top for a 400 as they are hard to find. i was going to look into this as i now own one. back in the 80's we would take 429 pistons, mill off the tops and use them in 460's with very good results. in fact i still have one of those engines in an old tow truck that has pinged numerous times over the years and still hits on all 8
yes it is very possible, and no i am not being sarcastic. pick up a copy of smokey uniks power secrets. they did numerous engine tests with the top ring as high as possible for extra rod length. and had no problems with the top ring. i was doing this years before i had read the book however.
