A/C Install
I have a 95 f150 with the 300 inline six that came from the factory with no A/C. After some help from some users on this site, I've decided to install A/C myself. I found my exact truck in a junkyard that has A/C and has all the parts for it. This place is a 100% "you pull it" place and it's an hour and a half away from me so i want to make sure i pull all the parts i need the first time. I realize that i could buy a kit for this but i wanna save some money by pulling it myself. I'm wondering if someone could provide me with a checklist of all the parts i need to take while i'm up there. Also, some tips from people who know about this job would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to hear anything that anyone can add. Thanks in advance and i look forward to reading your replies.
First timer,,,,,,, plan on two days of 2nd guessing yourself.
Start at the front.
Condeser and its brackets
Fan Shroud for the 300 cid If you don't get one. Stop now, You must have it.
Compressor, bolts, Belt and wiring harness if there isn't an AC harness on your truck.
Accumulator and hoses.
Evaporator case and wiring.
The AC Controlhead and wiring harness.
The kit is far easier, is 100% all new parts and has a warranty.
wire from compressor to inside unit.
Compressor mount, may change the belt setup so look closely at you you have.
Idler pully, and maybe crank pulley
Condenser
Drier
Hoses (condenser line should have a site glass)
Fire wall penetration seals.
Inside unit (evap, exp valve, heater core (maybe), blower, climate controls, wiring). And any duct work if it has any.
In most cases you go a heavy duty radiator (2 roll to 3), and extra blade on fan (6-7).
Take some detail photo of your current engine, so you will now what pulleys have been changed. Check your radiator, how may rolls. If he had HD you may be ok. If not you may need it, fan and fan shroud. If the engine is there, see of there is control to raise the engine RPM at idle. I do not know when they started adding these.
Look at the fittings and see of it has been converted to R134. Most wrecking yards recover R12 due to $ value. So it may not have any anything in it. If there is any R12 and you are caught by EPA it can be a $10,000 fine. Hopefully it will have some pressure in it. That would indicate it may be a winner. Use the Shut off valves to seal the compressor off.
I would replace all lines and oil during re-assembly.
- Condensor and brackets
- compressor with bracket and bolts
- accumulator with hoses
- evaporator with one half of the case for it
- control head
all the images are in my gallery because i couldnt figure out how to add pics to this post. i forgot to take a pic of the control head but i have it. if you can think of anything i missed please let me know so i can go back tomorrow instead of having to wait another week.
