How do I know if my van is equipped with a tow package? When i bought my van, it came with a hitch& trailer wires. The rear also sits rather high compared to most e-150's. I noticed it also has a few extra leafs in the rear. The GVWR is 6700 lbs i believe the sticker on the door says, the door could've been replaced sometime in its life so im not sure. can any one help?
The big give away is does it have a FACTORY (not an aftermarket) tranny cooler? You can add hitches, spring leaves, and wiring. If it has a factory trans cooler (hard metal lines going into the cooler not rubber hose) then you probably have a towing package. You might even be able to still get the build sheet for your van by calling ford and giving them the VIN.
well, im not sure because the rad has been replaced(once before i owned it, and once now that its in my possesion). but, there i think theres one or two lines that are hard metal that run up close to where the rad is, but they are not connected to anything and they are plugged on the ends. i have never bothered to trace them. could these be the lines? if it helps i think my van was originally bought by Budget Car rental to be used a company work vehicle or by a place called FM industries (they manufacture and install windows)
Look at the radiator, those lines from the transmission SHOULD run into the radiator, and should not be capped off. If there's no other cooler you might want to add one. Being that it was a rental truck it probably does NOT have a factory tow package.
theres definatly no cooler there but it does have lines going to where *something* should be, i just checked yesterday after posting this thread. but like i said im not sure who owned it first, the rental company or FM industries. should i just add an aftermarket cooler to those lines?
EDIT: i traced those lines to the transmisson, so im guessing its supposed to have a trans cooler?
thanks to everyone for the input, i got a rad from another ford econoline I6 at the wreckers that had the same hoses as the one that i removed (which also was not factory) but those ends were capped off so i figured it was for a reason so i left it. would it be wise buy an aftermarket cooler and hook it up to those lines?
"Tow package?" An important part of the FORD "Tow package" was at one time referred to as 'Super Cooling'. This included a higher capacity radiator, often standard radiator cores were half the thickness, while Super Cooling radiators had tanks that were filled with core. Tranny coolers were part of it, some models had added oil coolers & fan upgrades too.

How much weight do you plan on towing with your van? I have the tranny cooler on my '05 E-150 with the 4.6L V-8. You might wanna consider a bigger transmission pan also. Mine holds 2 more quarts above the factory one. Plus I put the add a leafs on it, Class V tow hitch, brake controller as well. If you set it up properly and it doesn't look or feel heavy then you shouldn't have any problems.

at the moment I only have a boat about, 700-900lbs? its only a 14 footer with a 40hp motor. im not worried about that :P
Just someday I might have something larger that might need to be towed.
