I am planning on purchasing a E250 conversion van. The rep for the company said it is capable of towing up to 9000 pounds. I have not seen any information to back this up. I have the invoice information from ford. I realize that i will have to consider the weight added for the conversion.
E250 Van
5.4 eng.
3.73 axle w/limited slip
package 536 HD trailer Tow clas II/III/IV
It also has the RV package
and states a 7900 gvw
The maximum towing i have seen on the Ford site is 7400lbs. Is this figure assuming that the vehicle is setup with a towing package and is the maximum you can build it to tow? My trailer as packed with no water is 7,340. (I weighed it at a state weight station.) I am currently towing it with a E150 5.7 with 3.55's. Also conversion van. I dont want to ruin that van hense the reason for upgrading. Thank you for helping me to make an educated purchase.
The 7400 lbs towing sounds right for the 5.4. I have a 2001 F-250 SC 5.4 3.73 4x4. The "book" says this set up is good for 7100lbs towing. If I had it to do over I would go for the V10. I am pulling a trailer/car combo of about 4000 lbs. Throw in a few hills, traffic and a long ride and this motor is working hard. Cant imaging pulling for any distance with more of a load. Go bigger!!!
Thank you for your response. I think i will investigate if they do the conversion on a E350 if not i think i will be off to an Excursion with the v10 or PSD.
Keith, first welcome.
While you might look a long time to find a converted 1 Ton, most van converters will take your vehicle and set it up the way you want. Before my SD, I used a E350van with 460/C6/4.10 combo and it was a great tow vehicle, much more "liveable" with wife and three big boys on trips. You may well want to consider buying an Econoline with a V10 or even a PSD. rrrrrrrrrhhhhrrr!!!
Don't get me wrong, I think the Excursions are awsome, you just can't move around if you need to, (change baby, mop up spills, stop fight), so you may want to call a couple of the companies who convert Ford vans and get an idea on pricing. Hope that this is helpful.
Keith.
Just a word on the Conversion part....
Not sure who is doing your conversion, but if I were you, I'd check out http://www.sportsmobile.com
The do AWSOME conversions, but not real cheap. Well, you decide how much. They'll custom make your conversion any way that you want. They'll do E350's with Quigley 4x4, V10's, PSD's, Extended body, anything you want, and build the interior any way that you want, with any number of options. I would push for a 350 with a V10 or PSD though, with that much of a van and trailer. Good luck,
