Crank Endplay?

I just picked up my block from the machinist, i'm getting ready to throw everything together, but the machinist said something about having to "set" the endplay on ford cranks. I asked him what he meant, and he started talking about tightening it down and prying around with a screw driver and checking it with a dial indicator. I didnt really understand what he was talking about, it sounded just like you're checking it, i dont see how that would "set" anything. anyone know what he was talking about about?

Thats how you check it, but you use thrust bearings to change the distance.

You get thicker ones to decrease the distance and you sand off material of it with 320 grit sand paper to thin it to desired thickness (.005"-.010")

Turn a counter weight close to the thrust bearing till you can get 2 flat screw drivers in, one on each side of the bearing bulk head. Gently tap 2 screw drivers in on each side forcing the crank in one direction or another, it doesn't really matter which way. The idea is to align the 2 bearing halves up using the cranks thrust surface before you tighten them down. After that hold a piece of soft metal, brass or lead on the snout of the crank and strike it with a heavy hammer, firm but not hard. Do the same to the rear of the crank. Set up a indicator & check the clearance.
