ok, i was taking my boat out of the lake last night. Shifted T-box into 4Low and removed the boat. I then tied everything up and when to shift back into 2Hi and it wont. I have a 2001 F350 diesel w/ automatic and the auto locking hubs.Hubs are not engaged atm. I have never had this issue before and was wondering if a shift solinoid is stuck or something might be wrong with my Tranfer case?? Any thoughts would be fantastic.
Thanks for this info. I wrote it down in my repair folder for future reference. Had a little trouble with mine last week, trying to get it out of 4X4low, but it finally came out when I put it in neutral with the brake on and then turned the switch.
Owner's manual states you must have your foot on the brake, tranny in neutral, before trying to move the **** out of 4LOW.
Somtimes, especially at a boat ramp (pavement), the 4x4 is bound up - as in there is torque between the front and rear driveshafts keeping the transfer case from shifting.
I usually bounce the truck back and forth a few times before trying to get out of 4LOW.
I ran into this same problem last week. I had to move it 300' to get it out of the middle of traffic. I decided that that little of distance would be okay. Apparently, I was wrong. I finally got it back into 2low but now, it has a clicking sound that increases as I accelerate. Did I bend an axle or is my transfer case about to explode or???? Is it safe to drive?
Do you have the OEM auto/lock hubs? My driver's side hub on my 2004 starting do that a while back... turned out it was seized up, I couldn't turn the **** to manually lock it. When I took it out it sounded like a baby's rattle when I shook it. If it is a hub, they are easy to remove and I would recommend replacing them with Warn or Milemarker manual hubs.
Also, if you start your own thread you'll probably get more replies.
Dennis, thanks for your quick reply. I guess that's better than a chewed-up T-case, yeah? How would I be able to know for sure if that's it?
I've been hanging around this forum for a number of years, I've only ever seen one grenaded T-case here, and I'm pretty sure it was due to uber-extreme abuse.
I, on the other hand, have managed to turn a few hubs into scrap. If anything is going to break, hubs and U-joints will probably go first.
