I have a 2001, 7.3 diesel F250 with shift on the fly, automatic hubs. The 4wheel is not engaging when I turn the switch to 4Wheel. It will not engage for 4wheel low as well. I crawled under to make sure that all electrical connections are tight. No problems were found there.

Any ideas where to start to troubleshoot?
Thanks guys.
Hi Caretaker,
I have never encountered this problem personally but I have once before heard that the vacum pump or something like that will go out and not engage it into 4x4. I have only heard of this on the shift on the fly. usually they have the auto manual hubs I know our truck does. I also have heard that they are vacum lines on these trucks and can break causing the truck not to lock into 4x4. Not sure on any of them don't qoute me on it. Hopefully, somebody will come along and see your posting and know for sure. Oh, and by the way our truck is a 2002 Ford F250 4x4 triton v10 same equipment.

Get under the truck and have someone turn the 4x4 switch. See if you can hear the box beside the trans click. If it does, good. Look under the hood behind the passenger side battery, you will see the vac pump. Ckeck to see if you have vac at the pump. Follow the vac line to the 4x4 switch next to it. If you have vac going to the switch and no vac coming out of the switch, buy the switch. $60.00 at Ford

Does the 4x4 light on the dash come on? There is a relay the engages the motor that actually puts the diff in 4wd. My motor failed and the dash light did not come on. With the engine off, turn the 4wd **** - the light should come on and you should hear a click. If not, it could be a bad relay (try bypassing it) or even the motor ($400+ as I recall). Of course my motor died with 4 inches of snow on the ground last winter in a hilly area :-)
The "4X4" light does not come on when I turn the switch. I will check the relays and the vacuum system tomorrow (weather permitting). Thanks for the ideas

Then I would say if you are lucky it will be the relay. Unlucky, it will be the motor. My understanding is that the switch that activates the dash light has nothing to do with the actual hubs (vacuum) working.
MTMike, it looks like I'm on the unlucky side of life today. Changed out 2 relays with no change. I guess that I'll change the actuator motor next. Sorry to show my ignorance, but is the actuator motor about half the size of a flashlight, attached to the transfer case and is under the crossmember?
I am not sure as when mine died I needed it fixed "right now" and I was not at home so I paid to have it done at the dealer - got it fixed the following day. But that sounds about right. I think the part at the dealer was about $450 and I think I checked Napa or someplace that had if for about 1/2 that. Good luck!!
Caretaker,
Are the relays clicking? Have you checked all fuses? Before spending money on a motor that may not fix the problem get a meter or test light and check to see if your getting power to the motor. Someone here can surely help with fuse numbers and locations.
Before you spend money on the motor hit it with a dead blow hammer and see if that makes it work.
Remember the electric connections may be corroded clean them up and dielectric grease
This is a normal issue and usually this works but not always
At lease it could be a cheap fix
Thanks for all the input guys. I got swamped at work, and with a duck hunt approaching, I had to take to the shop. $561.00 for the actuator motor installed. At least I'm up and running....
