Anybody ever have a hub not disengage even after turning back to free?. Used 4x4 in my old 84 Ranger to use a crappy boat ramp and put boat in and out, disengaged hubs and put back in 2wd high and hit the hi-way. Truck felt like something was holding it back, drove about 15 miles at 60/65mph and stopped for lunch. Truck drove normally after stopping, got home and noticed front diff had vented out tube a good amount of 90wt. Put it up on jacks and front end was NOT engaged. It never done this before and I use the 4x4 frequently on trails, works normally now..........temporarily stuck hub going down the hi-way?
The directions for my hubs said to back up 10' or more after setting them to the "free" position.
Just a thought.....
i think thats more of a auto hub/newer ESOF hub. i know on my milemarkers when i set it to free, its free! when i lock it, there is no question.
its very possible that the hubs are sticking inside. it would be good to open them up, clean them out really well, do inspection, and put them back with fresh grease! but thats merely a suggestion!
Mine sometimes don't click into the unlock position right away but as soon as I spin the wheels any they do. Sometimes it takes longer but they always do come undone.
you could have gotten water in your diff and raised the fluid level making it puke some out on the way home, i assume since it puked fluid you don't have extended vent lines because if you did there is no way it would puke anything, mine are like 8ft long lol from the front diff up to the middle of the firewall

Naw, no water even near the front diff, and just the short stock vent tube........Update: Topped off front diff, cleaned all the old oil off from the incident. took out, ran some nasty logging access roads in 4x4, disengaged back to 2wd H, ran on hi-way about 25 miles at speeds from 55 to 80 mph..........no leakage, all is good.....just a fluke stuck hub that one time...........And I have heard that extended hi-speed hi-way driving (65/70mph) with hubs locked can vent gear oil out the vent tube (It was a hot day too).......Not gonna worry about it!, Thanks for all the replys!
It sounds like the one hub got bound up internally, and stayed engaged...Ive had hubs that were hard to turn either to free or lock position, and an NP 205 T-case in a 92 Dodge diesel that was a bear to get outta 4 wheel low.......Both the hubs and the transfer case lever in the two Rangers that i owned way back when(an 86 and an 88) were effortless to switch.....Sounds like a fluke, glad its resolved!
