My tranny finally kicked the bucket. She's had a rough life no doubt, been grinding into gears for about 25,000 miles now. Four people have learned to drive stick and learned to do burnouts in her(my self and my two siblings and my fiancee) Last night on the way to poker night I made a turn on to a road, and when I shifted from 2nd to 3rd, the gear shifter went up to third, but the tranny didn't. It's still in second and the shifter won't budge....Now where do I go from here. truck has 160,000miles. kinda beat up, but not too bad. It's an '01 reg cab flare side. I'm thinkin about toying with it a bit. I guess we'll see.
Best thing to do would be to make a visual inspection of the transmission. When the tranny died in my 97 f-150, there was a lot of visual damage. Take the tranny fluid pan out and look for significant amounts of metal in it - that's a good indicator.
Other than that, the best way to go would be to remove the tranny from the vehicle and proceed with either rebuilding or replacing it.
Well Loony, it's a 5-speed so no pan to remove. You can pull the shifter out of the top and see if the internal linkage is in a bind, but it sounds like the syncro's are shot and possible shift rod damage. If there is nobody in your area that rebuilds manual transmissions, then you may find a decent one at a local salvage yard.
Yeah just got er home today and had a busy day today, jes havent had the time to mess with it. Guess she got a little scared I just sent in my final payment last monday. Should have let her know she wasn't goin anywhere LOL
