ZF-6 guys

How much free play do you guys have in your shifter while it's in gear? Mine used to be very little, but it seems as though since I've gone over 200,000 miles it's increasing exponentially. At this point I can move the shifter around in about a 2-3" circle in any gear.

It's been almost five years since I've had the tranny out, but I don't remember this shifter being bushed....or adjustable in any way, so the question is can anything be done to tighten the shifter back up?

What are you doing moving the shifter around in while in gear? Mine's got some play in it, but I couldn't tell you how much. I'll check tomorrow while I'm driving around and report back.

Are you worried about side to side movement, or up and down also? Seems to me like 3" up or down would slip the tranny into neutral. I'll let you know what I find.

Yeah. While it's in gear the amount of "slop" in the shifter seems to be increasing. Not like on a daily basis, just is more than it used to be. No issues at all with it popping out of gear or anything. It's operating normally.

I have a ZF-6 trans out of nephew's fiancee's '99 F250 4x4. I can look at the shifter tomorrow and let you know if there is anything 'replaceable' in there. I have replaced the shifter ball seats and wave washer on some LD 5 spds before. I don't know for sure if these are similar, but I'll check and let you know.

I havent worked on a zf 6, but usually the shifter sits in a cup which is polyurethane, or some sort of plastic. It cracks, breaks, falls apart over time, and needs replaceing. Id have a hard time believeing the zf6 doesnt have one of those. You may notice a little harder shifting before long. My friends 95 5 speed ford needed it, my brothers nv 3500 from a chevy needed it, and my old granny 4 speed well, it had metal parts.

The only time mine was ever loose was because the two bolts that hold the shifter on were getting loose. Pull up the shifter boot and tighten them down.

ZF-6 Trans shifter parts

Name: ZF-6 trans shift components.gif
Views: 9416
Size: 48.3 KB See Item # 2 in the exploded view. These are the shifter blocks. It looks to be the only 'wearing' part in there, except for the inner shifter boot. I guess these could be worn and allow the shifter to rise up and give some slack. Would be easy enough to check.

Item Part Number Description
1 7210 Shift lever (lower)
2 7C371 Shift lever blocks
3 7277 Shift lever boot
4 7D152 Inner shift lever boot ring
5 7203 Shift housing

THANKS ROLAND!!!!!!!!!!!! Seems to me any one of those could be wore out and create slack... I have however noticed that i can pull my shifter up and down which would help your theory...

EDIT: Could you PM me the rest of the part names if ya got them...? Thanks

I will still try to look at the actual shifter tomorrow and ''see what I can see''.

3rd & 5th gear seem to have the most movement. Around 1" left or right.

My first thought as well. Unfortunately they are tight as when I installed them.

Thanks Roland. I was looking at that same page last night as well. I will check the blocks when I get a chance, but the larger part of the movement is lateral and not fore/aft, which leads me to believe they are not the problem.

That's what I'm talking about. Mine is a little more than that, and pretty much the same in every gear.

It will be interesting to see if the shifter ball rides in a cup that can be replaced.

On a side note. Anybody put one of those short throw shifters in? How many of the stock parts get replaced?
