First off I have a 7.3 truck but like the 6.0. I have neighbor that has a 05 6.0 with around 40,000. About 2 months ago it went in the shop under warranty because it would not start intermitently and he could not remember what they replaced. Well it is doing it again. He had the codes read and it was showing CPS (boy those are not as easy to get to as they are on the7.3) any way I pulled the CPS for him this evening so he could go get one in the morning. Questions
1. Are these as common of a problem as on the 7.3?
2. It appears that they are not the same it is about 6" long with a shinney magnetic tip right?
3. About what do they cost?
4. It is on the drivers side about 58o'clock facing the front of the truck right?
Sorry if this sound ignorant but I want to make sure I pulled the right part. It acts like a magnetic switch if you hold it to metal and pull it away you can hear it click although some times it will not.
I was bit by the failing cps a few years ago (now my son owns my old 7.3). Not an issue w/ the 6.0 from what I have heard. I can't answer regarding your question on pulling the correct sensor.
Had the same problem on my 04. Not a mechanic so not sure what a cps is. Ford garage had it three times to try to figure it out. Out of the blue it wouldn't start. First time I told them it would start by wiggling the wire harness that is looped in plastic on the left (drivers) side of the oil filter. I was told that had nothing to do with it, just a fluke. Turns out either the wiring harness or the sensor/switch it went to was bad. It has something to do with the oil pressure while cranking. Maybe they should listen to the customer a little more.
I had the CMP, CKS, and 3 other codes all at the same time. Turns out they were all trash codes from an extended crank to start due to something with my tune. Usually the 05 suffers from a problem with a fitting fracturing or breaking on the HPOP (high pressure oil pump), but that usually makes for extremely hard hot starts. I've never heard of a CPS going out on a 6.0, but I'm sure there have been some bad ones percentage wise. You can find the CMP sensor here: http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/6L_bible_h.../Page_010.html
Thanks for the input. I put the CPS back in this morning as the dealer said that they did not stock it nor have they ever sold one (not to say they never would go bad) they just do not seem to be a problem with these trucks. When I put it back in the truck started and has started ever since. His wife lets it get down to 30 or less miles to empty before getting fuel. Yesterday when it would not start it was full but the night before it was at 20 miles to empty.
Could this be the whole problem??
He has informed wife of the danger of running it so low.
