Just pick up a 1990 302/aod,4 wheel drive bronco, and love it.going to start with 3 inch body lift, what is a good tire and gear combo for the street.thinking 31 or 33 and i will be doing some mod's to the 302 and tran's in the near future, anyone with some pic's.
Welcome, go to the user CP and fill in the signature area with info on your rig so we dont have to ask all the time.
sure about the tranny? how does the shift selector read? reason i ask is the E4od should be in there not the AOD.
can you weld? if not i would not recommend a body lift. look into a rc 4"lift if money is tight. the stock suspension sucks and going with a body lift does nothing for ya honestly. 31's will fit on your rig stock just so you know.
33" tires run 4.10 gears
35" tires run 4.56 or 4.88 depending on what you plan on using it for.
What gears do you have in there now? 31s are not much bigger than stock and 33s probably wouldn't be too much of a problem with 4.10s I run 33s with no lift at all just a little rubbing on tight turns. And I have 3.73 gears My motor turns about 1600 rpms in OD, Takes off the line no problem actually suprises alot of people. Off road if I get into some nasty deep sugar sand it will lug in 1st 4hi, but thats what 4 lo is for!! If you are going for torque don't put fat tube dual exhaust on it. You want long skinny pipes for it, Maybe keep the 2into1 and just replace the muffler for better sound.
I had 3.73's in my 88' Bronco with 35's and thought I had no problem. First, I lost OD. (not enough power to drive it) Then, I burned up 1st gear twice (AOD) and twisted off my driveshafts once. (major PITA) Finnally I changed to 4.56's. I should have done right off. I know 31's will not cause that much problems. But 33's Hmmmm. Now I'm running 4.88's with 38's. I love em.
By the way, I dont understand how you got an AOD in a 90' either. I like the AOD (my current truck has a E40D)
Sounds like a little overdriving breaking driveshafts and all. I have owned my truck since 2000 without a problem (33s the whole time) Even when my double cardon joint was so wore out I could just push grease right through the cap seal with my finger to keep it going until I could rebuild about a year and a half too much working just wanted to go fishing on my days off while towing boat with truck both concrete ramps and tidal flats(mud!) shore launching! (1700#) I also replace my tranny fluid, tcase and differential lube every 30k! Having bigger tires than stock is a increased service schedule! Black fox check your axle tags if you don't have them jack up the truck and turn the driveshaft and count the number of turns you make to one tire rotation!!
Yea, I was stuck in deep gravel when I twisted the shafts. The rear shaft took out my fuel lines and wiring. But My point is when you put big rubber on without changing gears, the stress goes to the shafts and tranny. When you change the gears, the stress goes to the axles. They can take it better, up to a point.
